Wheat Recovers and Moves Up to I Stronger Close Independent Strength'in Corn Stabilizes Leading Cereal; Oats Prices Finn; Rye Depressed Early. lty CHARI.ES LEYDZ.V Universal Service Staff Correspondent. Chicago, Dec 23 —Recovering well from the heavy holiday liquidation of the pre vious session wheat prices moved over an Irregular course today to a strong and higher «dose. Timely support from inter ests that were among the Lest sellers the last few days offset the continued profit taking Independent strength in corn no doubt went a long way in atabillzing the ( leading cereal. Wheat closed higher, corn waft 2($2*4c higher, oats were %c ad j Yu need and rye ruled t* <1flc higher. There was not. much news in evidence «Hand most of the dHy the trend in wheat was a nervous <#ie. The local element was noi very successful on either side of the market, the swings being so rapid both ways within a narrow range. The refusal of Liverpool to sympathize in full with the slump In North American mar kets on Monday tended to eliminate fears | of a sustained setback Export sales were fair at 400.000 bush els wheat and lOO.Oari bushels barley. The United Kingdom and Germany were the buvers. Liverpool dosed 1 ‘n ®1 Hd off. There was active corp mission house buying of corn which gradually forced shorts to cover. This grain was strong all day and registered top levels at the close. Weather conditions were expected to delay the movement of new crop corn front the interior as well as increase the demand for the grain Demand for corn on spot whs satisfactory with the basis unchanged to tyc higher at the last. Realizing in oats featured the early trade, but resting orders to buy through commission houses on the dips gradually absorbed the offerings and prices firmed at the last. Liquidation in rye depressed that grain early, hut the buying power was sur prisingly active and the market strength ened. Provisions closed easier. Lard was un changed to 12 Vs*’ off and ribs were un changed to 2Vfec lower. Pit Notes. The tenor of foreign nexxs again re flected the great need of supplies abroad rAvd. suggested that it would only be a matter of a short time when foreigners would have to re-enter the world's ex port market in an active way. The rising prices of foodstuffs in parts of the con tinent have not been checked. Decreas ing* supplies of wheat and flour on ocean passage the last month have proven »on | clusively that, consumption in Europe is above normal. Spreading operations again featured the I wheat trading. There was considerable selling here against purchases at Winnl I peg nnd Minneapolis by interests that are I especially bullish on the northwest gram situation. The Winnipeg market dis I played relative firmness compared with Chicago. though the volume of trade in I the Canadian market was light. 1 The increase of 9..*189.001' bushels wheat for the \ve«k in the Canadian visible .supply attracted considerable attention but little selling. The gain was laid to W .stock afloat mostly, which have increas ed since the close of lake navigation. I Canadian. wheat left for sale with th*» malority of advices Indicating that the Canadian farmer has marketed his crop to date rather successfully, all things H considered. The 'trade generally has been acting with considerable caution the last fexv days. Prices are high, near the best levels of tlie reason, and xvith the holi day dullness to be expected tn the ex i port market it. has seemed unlikely that the bull market xvould continue. The tendency appears to be. however, to buv ft; on the dins. Tills character of trading has proven most successful for tb« lasf f#r. months, and there is little reason . to believe that It will not continue for the balance of the crop ye-ar. CHICAGO PRICES.
