Rye Comes to Life Bulging Rapidly to New High Mark ■ 1 ■ Wheat Rallies Also and Fin ishes Higher; Recovery in Corn and Oaftp Not Complete. Bj CHARI.KN J. 1,K.VI»KN. Inherval Service Staff Correspondent. Chicago. Dec. 16.—Rye, the laggard in the upward trend of grain prices for rainy days, came to life today and bulged rapidly on reports of revived export dr tnand. New tops were res* hed by the May and July* deliveries. Wheat rallied also and finished higher, after a series of uncertain swings all day. The re covery in corn ami oats was not com plete. Germany and Norway were re ported asking for substantial offers for rye and considerable business >\aa ef fect ed. Wheat closed ijc to 1c higher, corn was %c to Tic down, oats were un changed to *40 lower and rye ruled 1 %e to 4"%h higher. Volume of trade In the wheat pit was hot. as large as recently. There were many holding aloof until after the gov ernment report Is posted tomorrow-. The local element was Inclined to "scalp" on the selling side, but the bears were given several bad twists during the la.-t hour. Houses that have been supporting wheat for weeks took, most of the offerings on the early dips The sen board confirmed export sales of 600.000 bushels of wheat, with the United Kingdom and Germany among the best' buyers. Liverpool wheat futures closed unchanged to %d lower. Corn was reactionary most of the day. hut tjre strength in other grains brought about a recovery. The visible supply in creased over 2,000.000 bushels for the \ week. This is the time for the corn visible to increase and changes in tin terminal supplies are bound to be up ward. The demand for the spot offer ings today was fairly good, but the basis tv a a easy at the close. Profit-taking sales in onts were heavy during the day. but the market closed [ a good recovery from bottom levels. The commission house trade was fairly broad. Provisions were under the influence of prof It-taking most of the session and worked gradually lower. Lard Hosed Un to 25c lower and ribs 20c down. Pit Notes. There was plenty of hull news In cir culation today but wheat acted most of the tMi« like it was Jockeying for a set back. The Jaw of averages was pointed to as a good reason for a reaction hut these reactions have lulled to materialize. There are too many people willing to buy on the weak spots, and profit taking «.\Jpfk.sre well absorbed. It Is claimed by the bulls that Europe has taken our surplus out of the country, that conditions are stronger them even the -Average believer in higher prices is aware. Wheat and flour on ocean pas sage last week decreased 4.4i)8,0®0 bushels. The world shipments were only moder ately . reduced. Consumption of grain in Europe is going on at a rapid rate, and at hem** we are beginning to emphastz# Lis gmatl amount of wheat left back on the farms. According to accepted reports from t he southwest the state of Kansas has less than 15 per cent of its crop stiil un marketed. The primary receipts today were under last year. A vear ago farm ers were holding their grain buck for higher prices. This year they have sold all their wheat because prices have been more or less satisfactory. The United StateH visible supply de creased for the second week. It looks as though inroads of substantial size Into the supply are nearing. For the week the visible decreased 1.382,000 bushels It totals 98.079,000 bushels against 73.808,000 bushel* last year. Indication* are for very small receipts at terminals during the nexl few' days. Indications are for very snpall receipts at terminals during the next few' day*. Also weather pros pects are not Indicative of 1 free run in the interior, especially in the southwest, •’ash .wheat is selling at strong levels in almost every Important market of the world. A car of dark hard Montana wheat sold at $2, a bushel in Minneapolis today. CHICAGO TRICES. By Updike Grain Uo . Atlantic 6312 Art. | Open. ! Texas preferred going on a -5 per cent dividend basis, confident expec tation of an increase in Atchison's di vidend in January, the rails were in high favor In the stock market. Atchison went to the highest point reached In a decade and Jersey Central to the highest since 191*. Sentiment was strongly bullish. All the steels were up. United Suites Steel toucher! 119. The oils were strong early in the day. but weakened later on news of the pro duction of the Wortham pool in Texas. Many observers didn't like the appear ance of the market. It had a suggestion of wildness. More stocks had advances of from to 13 points than perhaps has been the case In any other session in a yea r Cotton moved slowly but Heartily higher throughout the day. Liverpool whs against this market. Coffee, erratic, but not quite so flighty as it has been recently, closed 16 to 16 points up Rugae was very weak and closed 7 to 25 points down. Foreign exchange, slightly lower. Call money opened at 3% and, despite h heavy turnover In the money market, the rate declined later to 3 per cent. ■ Liverpool came %<2%d down on whdat. There wax not much upon which to bane bull arguments. Export demand at the present, time is small. Until it revives, hk is likely to happen at any time, the market must be ruled by other influences. There was a continuation of profit taking In corn and oats and the only strong demand in the grain group wan for rj e More evidence accumulates of the re markable situation in relation to corn.
