i snrr . ;-- > Wife’s Confessional A (tele Garrison's New Phase of REVELATIONS OF A WIFE t (Copyright, H54 ) ^ The Happy Surprise With Which Junior Greeted Madge. “Well! What nre you wailing for?" Mother Graham looked up imperi ously from the armchair In which I had ensconced her, nnd from which she had issued the command to bring Junior to her. "Because there is nothing to hurry for,” I parried. "Junior was still asleep when I looked in a few min utes ago." “That's no sign he's asleep now,’’1 she retorted acidly. “You know he generally wakes up by this time. You act as if I had some contagious dis ease. I never heard before that a fall was catching." Her voice was heavily sarcastic, mi l 1 gave the laugh which she pat ently expected at her sally, i “One never can tell about these things," I said .demurely, starting for the door. "Medical science Is making all sorts of new discoveries, you know. But I'll look at Junior again. If he's , awake, I'll dress him and bring him ■ in to yo might away." \ "That's something more like it," she commented grudgingly. "1 was be glning to think that something was up which you didn't want me to know." I bowed mentally to her intuition as I hurried into the room next rioor where I had left Junior and Marion asleep. I dreaded Infinitely the cx ^^elanation to Mother Graham of the inflamed and blotched rendition other I idolized grandson's face. A Glorious Improvement. I had left the room darkened, hut when I entered the sun was stream ing Into windows to the top of whirh the shades had been sent, and Ma rion, perched upon the bed with Jun ior, was examining his face with a serious, knowing air, which would have done credit to any hospital nurse. “Oh! Mama!" Junior's voice was a carol. "Those nasty old sores are most all gone away, and I don't burn any more.” "There are only a few tiny places left, really, Auntie Madge," Marion chimed In, raising her beautiful dark blue eyes, so like her mother's, to mine. "And they look more like mosquito bites than anything else." I had my little lad in my arms by this time, and was carefully exam ining him, finding only confirmation of Marlon's verdict. Mingled with my £ relief at seeing that the mysterious r poison received at the heach had not injured him, was a newly-found hope that I could keep Mother Graham In Ignorance of the whole episode. To do that, however, I must Involve the children In the deception, and al though it .was a most Innocent one, my conscience indulged itself in an uneasy qualm as I spoke warnlngly, distinctly: “Junior, will you promise Mother something—word of honor?" I began, with the familiar formula which 1 used with him ever since he lion hern able to understand anything. 1 Vitally his response is "Yer,s, Ma ma, truly," but to my amazement and amusement, he scrambled to hts feet, threw back his head and de claimed: "Honest true, black and blue, cross my heart, hope to die, you bet your boots!” "Oh! Junior!" Marion exclaimed with an annoyed maternal air, then she explained anxiously to me. "That's a combination of Katie anti Jerry Tlcer," she said. "Of course he couldn't help but learn them, hut I didn't think he’d say them to you." "It doesn't matter, now," I loid her in a low tone, then I turned to my small son, and addressed hint again, knowing that Marion would take every detail of my admonition as her own. "Junior, Oranzie is sick," I said slowly, impressively. "She fell down and hurt herself, and if we want her to get better, we mustn't let her worry about anything. Now if she knew that you had been hurt with those bail blotches on your face and body, she would worry, so you must not tell her anything about getting poisoned." Junior looked at me steadily, evi dently turning over the admonition in his mind. "All right,"* he said finally, and then to my amazement added, "And if she says 'Richard Second, what arc those awful tilings'."''—Indicating the small spots still on his face—"I'll say: ‘Skeeter biles, Oranzie, can't you see?' " "Oh, Junior!" I exclaimed re proachfully. wildly casting about for words in which to meet a situation 1 bad never before been compelled to face with my little son, hut he saved me the trouble. “I don't want to hurt Oranzie!" he said sturdily. • "But, remember, dear," I hastened to say, "the first minute Oranzie is hatter you and I will tell her every thing." "Yes. Mama," he said and I real ized that he understood, and then he exclaimed: "I want to see Oranzie now! Take me to Oranzie!" Trinity Guild Fair. Dear Miss Allen: The boy that I go with called nte up one n'ght ami said he would not he aide to see me be cause he had to go away on business. When he came he told me that he had told a lie. He said that he was out on a drunk and was afraid he would not he over it hi time. He knew that I am opposed to his drinking. When I say anything about quitting he begs of me to let him come. Ills father and mother died when lie was young. He says that because he hasn't any mother he doesn't care about any thing. I’icase tell me how to ask him to stop drinking. If lie does not, shall I quit him'.’ 1 hate dreadfully to give him up. I have been with so I many fellows already and could not | get along with them. HU E EYES. You are lavishing your love on a young man who is not worthy of it because his ideals are low and his character weak, lie seems to think it is sporty to drink and pretends to do it because he lias not the strength ening Influence of Ills mother. Sure ly you can see that if he amounted to anything he would want to be of good character out of respect for his mother's memory. My advice is to tell the young man you will go with him as long ns he does not drink, but If you find he prefers to drink to your company you are going to give him up. Doll I'p of Course! A girl wrote me a pathetic letter (he other day. She has youth, abil ity, sterling character. Yet she can't hold the interest or love of men. She asked me why and Enclosed a snap shot of herself to help my analysis. This photograph explained the rea son. Mary—ns I shall call her—showed In her photograph a round, good-nat ured face with a bob unbecomingly cut to accent that rotundity. Some way, even in the photograph, Mary's face had a shiny look. Mary was clumsj—she leaned heavily on one foot. And she was obviously over weight. Her frock—while doubtless neat and clean, was—well, just some thing for Mary to put on without re gard to attractiveness or "chic.” My advice to Mary and all Marys— bless their hearts—who sigh for pop ularity and love, is: Doll up. Mary dear, and keep slim. Then when John marries you—for he will one day sooner or later unless you hide your real sweet self beneath a disguise of clumsy, ugly dowdiness —continue "dolling up." Look always as freshly crisp and pretty—in bungalow apron at your housework, in smart suit for the street, in dainty evening frock—as "a great hig, beautiful doll.” By doing so you'll lose none of your wo manliness, and you'll gain infinite ad miration anjl love. f-\ Miss Information! v___/ I WANT TO FURNISH MY LIVING] ROOM iN KEEPING WITH MV/ PERSONALITY.
