t Attorney Travels With Oakland Six Illinois Man ]With His Ameri can-Made Car Has Easy Going Across Scot land Hills. Taka your own oar with you on your trip abroad Is the advlca of William Lister of Evanaton, assist ant attorney general of Illinois, after cnmpletelng a 3,000 mile trip through England, Scotland and part of tho European continent. Mr. Lister, driving an Oakland six which he took over with him, was enthusiastic over the Joy of touring in his own car and suggested that trips through England and Scotland especially should be made In a motor car—your own motor car. “One may rent a car over there.” he explains, “but I am sure it Is much better to have your own ear with which you are entirely familiar. * My motor trip in ihe highlands of Scotland was a delightful exper ience. On one occasion we made a trip in one day which normally, by train and bus, would consume 1L roe days. And while traveling through the lonely glens and over the heather-clad hills, we made frequent halls which Ihe use of ihp motor car as a conveyance con veniently permitted. Joined Auto Club. “Our Oakland was delivered to the steamship wharf iu Montreal the evening before sailing. This was the last we saw of Ihe car until it was unloaded on the pier in fllasgow, equipped with British license plates and membership in the automobile association. This is part of the steamship service.” Mr. Lister gives an interesting account of the activities of the Brit ish automobile association. He said thnt one of the unique services ren dered by the association was the em ployment of scouts to ride the high ways to render aid to motorists be longing to the organization. “The Automobile association of Great Britain is a splended organi zation,” he explained. “The most conspicuous evidence of contact be tween the association and its menj bers is the motorcycle and bicycle scouts, who patrot the highways. This association maintains telephone booths along the highways, and gar , age agents. It also publishes a list of ^ accredited hotels. Among the facil ities In these hotels, toilet cabinets are provided for members of the n-soeiation in which can he fpund needeii articles. Including towels, comb and brush, etc. Each member Is furnished with a key with which to open the telephone booths and toilet cabinets. Had Xo Trouble. “The association scout, ns a rule. Is kind and accommodating, and whenever a member of the assoeia ^ i on pusses him on the highway, If lie is dismounted, lie (immediately bring* himself to attention and sa lutes. While riding he is also re oHired to salute the members as liny pass. The scouts carry a first aid kit and a small repair equipment. The highways in Scotland and Eng land are very good and are macad amized. Gasoline sells at 50 cents a gallon. In London T saw quite a few Oaklands and also on the con tinent. “During my entire trip T never had a wrench on ihe car. not evpn was a spark plug removed nor a tire taken off. The brakes were never touched, which 1 think is a good test for four-wheel break ef ficiency, especailly in a hillv country such as through which we travel ed while abroad. “It may be interesting to you to know that tho cost of transporting my car from seaboard to seaboard and return, including foreign license plates for England and Scotland, automobile association license and 3 0 gallons of gasoline, which was put into tlie car after being unloaded from the steamship was $350. I think anyone touring in England and Beotiand. particularly . should by all means take his car along. Smartly Designed and Mechanically Correct Is the New Reo “Gold Standard Coupe” For years Reo Motor Car company products have«been known as "the gold standard of values." Now, fol lowing the celebration of Its 20th an niversary, Reo announces the "gold standard coupe," a closed model in which smart appearance and mechan ical quality are combined in an tin usually attractive ensemble. Reo coach builders, in designing the "gold standard coupe,” studied the lines of the more fashionable English and European custom body builders and then adapter^ them to American tastes. They retained the distinctive contours characteristic of the present vogue across the water and added the conveniences demanded by American motorists. The result is believed to be a triumph in quality motor rar building. Chassis quality is assured in this model by the use of the Reo TS chassis, gradually developed and re; fined over a period of several years, and now standard for all Reo pas senger models. This chassis has the famous high-powered T-S engine for its power unit, with capabilities of 50-horsepower and more In spite of the small size and light weight of the engine. Reo's intake valves in head, exhaust valves in side arrange ment, is one of the outstanding char acteristics of the unit. An addition to the Coliseum, which has been the scene of many national political conventions and other big events, provides sufficient space in which to house the motor exposition in its entirety. Heretofore It has been necessary to use the First Regiment armory as an additional building to take care of the overflow. The armory and coliseum are a block apart and were connected Hudson-Essex Now in New Quarters Company Reports Closed Car Demand Is Sensation of Industry. The Omaha Hudson Essex Is now fully established in the new location at Twentieth and Harney streets. Many Hudson and Essex owners are taking advantage of Improved facili ties for handling service work and find the new location convenient. The company reports It Is no longer a trend toward enclosed cars; It’s a stampede. The gomlng automobile shows will look like closed car ex hibits. The demand for closed cars, which the great sales of Hudson and j Essex cars first proved, is the-most notable factor In the automobile busi ness. Hudson Essex Introduced the Idea of the coach, an enclosed car to sell at a new low standard of price. It Is remarkable that, up to the time of the coach, the automobile Industry made magnificent strides In all phases of volume and standardized production except In the manufacture of closedi bodies. Closed bodies were still made by slow and costly methods a century or more old. The coach changed that; It was the first closed car which could be made under the same system of progressive manu facture which had brought such wonderful economics elsewhere In the Industry and made universal motor ing possible. by what was Jocularly referred to as “pneumonia lane." The coming show will be the silver jubilee exposition. Fitting ceremony will mark the quarter-centennial cele bration and special effects will be worked out In decorations to honor the occasion. Plalnview', Nov. 22.—Local sports men have decided to organize a chap ter of the Izaak Walton league, and a petition for a chapter will be filed Immediately.
