Hedging Pressure j Upon Wheat Makes! Prices Give Way! Close Heavy and at Bottom; Other Grains Relatively Steady ^ ith Gorn Higher at Last. By I IIARLES J. TJSYDKN. I nlversal Service Stuff Correspondent. Chicago, Oct. 28.—Hedging pressure avairtsi <*>rthwe«t and southwest rash, wheat gradually filled up the moderate! export and speculative absorption In the1 l"1 Hi Pit today, and the late trading wit-j to ssed a rapid giving way of prices, The dose w.ts heavy and at the bottom. Lo- * « iN who had sympathized with tlie ap }>.!!• nr firmness in the market early were dislodged on the setback. Other grains wett* relatively steady with corn higher at i ho last. Wli at finished 1a* to 2’Hc lower* corn v is 'a to 1« higher: oatR were % to %<• down, and rye ruled 1% to l\c lower. fash Interests offered wheat in the pit ♦•(insistently during the session: Foreign nows whs stimulating and helped to sus i.i in the market early but the local lit n.| is not as sensitive to the action of Liverpool and Buenos Aires as It was smiie time ago past. There is too much w i.:,t on tap in this country and the vc;iKness. temporary at least, in the do ii • -lie situation lufs dominated. The seaboard confirmed export sales of 2. ",oti,()0n bushels wheat, with the northern springs in greatest demand. Fairly good sales "f rye and barley were put through. Liverpool failed to maintain best levels but ♦losed hH to \ pence up. Corn sold off early and then en countered an impressive brand of support and rallied briskly. Covering by shorts Mas Induced on the upturn. The Into weakness in wheat however, forced a re action in the yellow cereal but the tnar ket managed to maintain some of its gain. Husking returns from wide areas of the Lelt told of disappointing yields, and there was buying of old corn here by prospective feeders who figure the quality of the now crop will not do. Oat* displayed firmness during the early trade but lost all gains at the last. Commission house buying early was ag gressive. Trade In the rye pit was moderate, and price® trailed wheat up early and down late. Foreign demand for rye lias been less active the last week, and the specu lative interest also. Provisions rallied on active buying by ♦ ash Interests. Lard was 5 to 17 higher and ribs were 5c lower. 1'it Notes. December Wheat naturally reflected the weakness in the domestic situation most, and dropped to a discount of 6Vie undo! the May. Premiums locally were un changed and the demand fair. The lack or' demand for the cash article in the kou til west, however, attracted more titan usual attention with No. 2 hard wheat <tt Kansas City selling 3c under thn De cember—the widest difference on the crop to date. Shipments of wheat out of primary points are large, especially in the north west, hut the primary run continues at Harvest rate. Receipts today totalled 3. *', 19,000 bushels compared with 1,116,000 bushels a year ago. There have been persistent report® from wide sections of the wheat belt that the farmer has Mopped Helling and that ns soon as coun try elevators ship out the bulk of their holdings the run to terminals will drop abruptly* This is more than a pos sibility. In 'Canada farmers are rushing their wheat more rapidly to market. Winni peg received over 2,000 cars today, and deliveries on October contracts were 792, ono bushels, the biggest so far tills month. The current delivery there was relatively weak at the last compared with the de ferred months. Winnipeg, however, la •still at too great a premium over Chi co go. Tha world’s available supply of wheat and flour for the week increased 10, 739.000 bushels, against 13.906,000 bushels Increase last, week, and 13.959,000 bushels Increase a year ago. The total is 216,679.. 000 bushels, compared with 207,213.000 bushel® Inst year. Considering the enor mous movement of wheat in this country the available supply does not look out of line. On tho contrary, the figures prove That the rash article has been going into consumptive channel* with more than the ordinary rate of speed, and It seems to be a certainty the outgo of wheat will be accentuated as soon as the rush of grain from the farms subsides. Railroad Loading j Reports Bullish j but Effect Weak Hail Stocks Not Particularly Strong; More Interest Shown in Coppers and Industrials. j ________ r Mv Kit II Alto SI'ILI am;. I iiiwr-ul Service HimiicImI Kditor. New York. Get. 28.—From a general market viewpoint nothing could he much more bullish than the railroad car load ing report for the third week of October, snowing as it did the biggest traffic in the history of the nation's transportation lines. Mui h of the influence of this re markable showing, it was felt, has been discounted and the market today accepted the figures as if they meant nothing re marka hie. Kail* were not par ticularly strong. Mom interest was shown in various of the coppers and some of the Industrials. Sear-i-Roebuck was the spectacular feature of the day. The common rose 4f* and the preferred 4 Vp. It was an nounced that Sears.Roebuck will retire its $8,000,000 of preferred on November In. That would leave only 1,000.000 shares of common outstanding. The preferred will be retired at 125. When this Is done It will he a fine achievement and mark an unusual "come ha< k" of a great merchandising corpora tion. Metal shares were fairly strong. So were the motors. Reports of further cuts in prices of oil did not tend to bring the petroleum issues into favor. The sugars were very weak. American Sugar was down to a. new low of 36I4. anti various of the others were without support. Lr. S. Steel was dull and strong throughout tin- day. Interest in the election seems to have waned. Transactions for the day aggregated 709.700 share*. Rails advanced on an average 1-3 of a point. Industrials advanced on an average nearly \ of a point. ( all money. 2% to 3 per cent. Time money, 2% to 3*4 per cent. Cot ton was rather dull but strong most of the day, prices working gradually higher. The grain markets were rather tame. Such news as developed bearing on the crops was mildly bullish The grade of Canadian wheat was declared by one of the authorities to he lower than generally understood apd the crop for all Canada was put at 270.000.non bushels. Liverpool whs colorless. I)ue to come %d up. the opening was from \ H1 d up. and the close then- was about r«d up. Prices at Chicago moved within a mod erate range most of the day, hut in the last half hour someone turned loose a lot of wheat ami under the weight of it the market went soft.
