Wheat Market Is Irregular at Close Saturday rakn^M at Winnipeg, Due to Good Weather, Make Bulls Hesitate to Buy. By CHARLES J. LEA DEN. I nlrereal Service Staff f orre«ipondcnL Chicago, Oct. 1*.—Outside trade failed to enthuse In the wheat pit today and week-end profit-taking carried the mar ket down irregularly for the day. The relative weakness at Winnipeg, due to improved weather conditions and pros pect* for heavier movement of new crop stain from the Interior, made bulls hesi tate. On the breaks, however, fair sup port was encountered and the finish wit nessed a flurry from bottom levels. Wheat closed *40 to lVfcr down, corn was JBe to %c higher, cats were %c lower to >4c higher and rye ruled Uc to higher. In many quarters there was distinct evidence to go slow' en the buying side yf the market. While Duluth confirmed export sales of late Friday amounting to 2,000,000 bushels, local exporters said the foreign demand hRd apparently been salis fw*d for the present and that over night offers met with little response. Liverpool finished ’* U Sri higher. This whs h poor response to the strength manifested in North American markets on the previous day. The tenor of for eign news remained tyillish. however, the t niied Kingdom reporting active demand from the continent. l.i ue largely lo week-end short cover lng Kin displayed a heeler undertone and float'd higher. There was fair sup port noted uf times also The trade is g'rvwHv mixed in their view* as to the prJbable trend of corn prices, bearing in jiiirtd.' however, that this reason of the >e.<r is h difficult one In which 10 bull the market. Weather conditions over the • corn territory have been gradually im ■ proving and it is likely' that final yields .‘will be appreciably larger than were indi ‘vuihd a lew weeks bach. 1 ijh,ts closed Irregularly. Commission ! houses operated on both sides of the mar •J.ei. With oilier grain laggard n is dif ficult to do much with oais at this time. Rye trade was lighter, but there was a la. K of pressure on this grain and the ifini*h was higher. fSxport demand early .’in 1 he day was of fair amount with <om mi as ton houses absorbing on the weak ^ Provisions were strong and active. Lard was PJ »,* W27 ’/*c higher and ribs were 7 'ue higher. Pit Notes. December wheat has been displaying a. steady undertone lately compared with the deferred months. At the close the December was 3c under ihe May. against, ti'ijc under some time back, and trade leaders are expecting this month to K» to 0 premium. The wheat market beiu-. largely a merchandising affair, it is only natural that export news is closely; watched. Late reports to some lmusc.-, said that foreigners In instances wete, trying to resell. - Many reports from the Argentine ad vised that the recent rainfall was 113««- j and insufficient, but the Buenos Aires, market has not been excited over crop I conditions in the Arge^in* l° d*t*-.aTJ„ I hence the local trade were Inclined to await further development s In that «pun try. The outlook is for smaller yi*W" this year In the Argentine, the official estimate being for a cron of 204,0°°,000 bushel*, against 249,000.000 tushels last ^ The last wheat crop In the Argentine wan exceptionally .good yields per acre averaging in excess of 14 bushel* to the acre while the five-year aveinge is "light iv over 11 bushels to tbo at-rs. A nor mal crop In the southern hemisphere by no mean, would clmnge the strength In the world situation, although It ml*"! possibly defer prices from reaching rrrnclti higher levels until after th. turn of *■ That^tho world Is rapidly consuming ■wheat supplies is apparent.
