Today The Bonds Melt. But the Street's Un happy. What's News? The Answer Describes You. By ARTHUR BRISBANE / The hundred and ten millions of German reparation bonds, bearing 7 per cent interest, offered at 92, were gobbled up as soon as offered. Percival S. Hill, head of the big tobacco company, set a good exam ple by taking $10,000,000 worth of them. Big concerns and individ uals should take those foreign bonds, not little people. In spite of the quick sale of German bonds, Wall street wasn’t happy yesterday. It dawns -bn gen tlemen that invest, speculate and gamble, that election day is going to be a most uncertain day. Stocks went down, money went up. What do you consider news? An swer that question and you would describe yourself. At what point do you stop and begin thinking, when you read these items of “To day?” Senator Brandegee, powerful man in congress, killed himself by inhaling gas. He had lost money in real real estate. Callizo, a Frenchman, beats the record for high flight by going up 12,066 meters. The supreme court saved a Chinese, Ciang Hung-Wan, from the death sentence. A new trial was ordered on the ground that Wan confessed murder under tor ture of the “third degree.” You read that the Chinese college stu dent confessed “on the 11th day of torture to the limit of endur ance.” Is it anybody’s business to punish meq that did the torturing, if it was really done? Marie Zelic married at 14, is 19 now. She went joy-riding with John Renne, 24, and others, not including her husband. Her hus band saw them coming back from the automobile ride at 6 in the morning. ,j One of the “joy-riding” party beat her husband with a hammer. Then the young wife, with a pocket knife, killed Renne, who had taken her on the party. The “other man’s wife” enterprise is never quite safe. Old men are sometimes as vain as boys, even when they are in telligent. Just before he died, at 80, Anatole France, urged to see some old friends, looked at himself in a mirror and said, “Send them away. I am too ugly.” Most old men, fortunately, are saved by merciful conceit, from realizing how ugly they really are, The prince of Wales, now visit ing Henry Ford, will understand why England cannot compete with us in building cheap cars _when Ford shows him how a car can be assembled in less than 12 minutes. The prince will see widely scat tered all the parts of a special car to be called “The Prince of Wales Special,” and 12 minutes later he will be asked to “jump in and drive the car under its own power." That’s what you might, call organ ized industry. - The city of Washington is agita ted by a leper, who escaped from a leper colony in Louisiana. Other lepers paid his expenses to Wash ington to protest against their con dition. Washington locked him up. Leprosy has ceased to be se rious since bath tubs became cheap. Enormous coal beds are discov ered in Alaska, inside the Arctic circle, the biggest in the world. That coal will be transformed into electric power and chemical by products some day, when men learn how to transport electricity with out loss. Africa has the biggest copper mine. It is holding down prices of copper in this country, worrying copper owners everywhere. The world will easily use all its copper at a good price, when builders ap preciate copper's permanent value. President Little of the Univer sity of Maine, says ultra-violet rays, invisible to our our feeble eyes, will prevent rickets in chil dren, and bow legs that come out weak bones. Use of ultra-violet rays develop stronger chickens. Chicks raised under ordinary win dow glass grow feeble and die be cause glass keeps out the “actinic” rays. Rich babies that get sunlight only through window glass, be cause their parents fear fresh arr, and poor babies, raised in dark al leys, die of rickets for the same reason. The sun’s life-giving power is kept away from them. In Mexico 100 are killed and wounded in election fights in Tuxt la Gutierrez. And in Mexico City the national cucharistic congress -! postpones its festival because the workers’ syndicate, bitterly op posed to the Catholic church, would not allow workmen to make necessary preparations.. Workers’ unions have forbidden workmen to decorate churches, and the presi dent of Mexico orders prosecution of citizens for adorning homes and business houses with religious sym bols.
