iMarket in Wheat Drops Abruptly, Then Recovers lorn Relatively Steady With Prospects of Strength in Spot Situation; Oats and Rye Lower. B,v CHARI.KS J. LEYDEN. I niversml Service Staff Correspondent. Chicago. Oct. 9.—Long wheat came out ’rsistently In the local pit today, being i traded by a cessation of the rapidly dvancing prices at Winnipeg and a dis ositlon to reduce lines prior to the gov nment report. The market swung r>wn abruptly and then recovered part of IS iia loss at the bell. Corn was relatively ■ -dendy. Wheat closed l&e to 4%c lower; corn ff *i‘.i lower to *4c higher; oats were gift r*c to lc lower, and rye ruled to l%c H lower. Speculative dtmantf for wheat generally! ■ "a* not so aggressive, but the export j I trade remained fairly active. October! wheat at Winnipeg dropped 7c from the H ' pentng apurt. Prospects for clearing ■ iwegther and indication* that deliveries of ■H* iXn. 3 Manitoba on contract would be Ulberal weakened the Canadian pit. Kxport wheat Malea in all position* were placed at 1,000.000 bushels, half do mestic spring and hard winters and the balance Manitoba* to Japan. Rye sales, 400.000 to 600.000 bushels. largely to Scandnnavlan countries. Barley sales, ion. non bushels, and flcur sales 26.000 barrel#. December corn ruled relatively steady 7 compared with the late months. The demand for cash corn is giving no little ^encouragement to the bulls, and the late ^ ness of the new crop will probably strengthen the *pot situation further. The government report issued after the clone showed a further loss In the prospective ■ yields, although some bulls expected more proportionately. Oat* .encountered c. naidersble r#all*. • ing with other grain* and dropped. Scattered commission house absorption held th# market on the decline. Rye was inclined to trail wheat. Liquidation wan again apparent In this '■M grain, but the dips met pretty fair ex port buying Provision* were irregular. Ijird was 2*4# higher to 15c lower, and ribs were unchanged to 10c lower. Pit Notes. The trade had if that several of the prominent grain in<*n were selling out long wheat at Winnipeg and reinstating In the local pit. Considering the volume of profit-taking that was on here and for the past three or four days, the market so far ha* given a good account of itself. Th* Hose last night found price* Ipms than 3c under th* high point of th> year, which registered an advance of around 60c a bushel for wheat since last * Burin r the first hour wheat acu-.i firm and moved Into higher •round. the strength at Liverpool and unfavorable weather overnight in Canada having a stabilising influence. Rain and* snow over the prairie provinces the last few days further curtailed the marketing of grain as well as threshing. Private advices from Winnipeg Insist that the crop is lower than most estimates to date have placed it. Thera were 2 SOO.nnO domestic wheat and flour cleared from I’nited State* ports today. The demand for cash wheat locally wn» appreciably active for con tract grades, while the domestic flour in dustry Is also expected to continue its activltv. There is no distinct evidence that tfie bull market in wheat ss yet Is over. Wheat, rye and potato crops in many j countries on the continent are material!’' I below last year. In Poland the wheat I yield is placed bv the international ineti I tute at Rome at 29.790.000 bushels, or 20 I 000.000 bushels leas than !aer. year. The rye crop In that country is 84.000.00u bushel* short of 1923 The Italian wheat crop is confirmed os being materially un der a year ago The big takings of d" mestlc wheat bv Kurop* the Isat fev weeks had not been without cause and It may be a fact that what re-selling there has been was due to speculative profit-taking. New York. lOct. 9.—From tlm flat lethargic state V*n which the stock msrket has been recently, there was a sham change today. In the first hour the four speculative favoiltes, United States Steel, American Can. Baldwin and Cast Iron Pip*, were In \good demand arid rose easily. For a time It looked ttlke the start of a strong movement blit the re mainder of the list was alow to respond and the market later dropped back In bo a dull dragging affair. To some observers It appeared aa if the stage was being salt for the German loan*. Around noon the market turned flat arid with i lie opening of the baseball gsoie more attention was given to that affair than the movements of the stock market. Nevertheless, the day* result was Quite a gain. Various .of the coppcis were strong It was not because of env im provement In the copper market but owing to the rise In the price «>f silver. The tobaccos, its usual!, did well. American Tobacco In patticular. Some of the rails showed well and a few e>f the motorn. but the whole market was not of the charac ter to Impress the observer wftth Its strength. General Electric, which has been acting peculiarly of late, had another rtf Its Wi'd movements. The Inst hour of the stock exithange was very dull. Transactions for the day aggregated 526 600 shares.
