Trading Wildest in Grain Market Since World War Enormous Purchase of Fu tures; Prices Soar Rapid ly ; Wheat and Rye Reach New Highs. Bv CHArlLES J. I.EYDFTV. I nlrer-HHl Service Stjjff rorreKpondent. Chicago. Oct. 2. — Enormous buying of grain futures today developed the wild est day's trading since the war and prices . for the list soared rapidly, wheat and rye for all deliveries reaching new highs on the crop. Wheat sold above the $1.50 level for the first time since May, 1921. Great strength at Buenos Aires and Liverpool backed up by constant export demand for American wheat, rye, oats and barley started the ball rolling. Wheat closed 4*4 to 4\c higher: corn Was 2*4 to 3%c up; oats were 2 S to 29ic higher, and rye ruled 7‘4 to 8c up. Bulls who had sold out their wheat the last few days, believing that h good set back was in order, scrambled to reinstate their lines. The speculative demand was quite general and in some instances cred ited to the biggest operators In the trade Rye hopped up 8 cents. It seemed as though every buying order advanced this grain during the session. It being so tight The seaboard confirmed export sales <>r 4.000,000 bushels wheat in all positions, half Of which was Canadian grain to the United Kingdom, and the continent. The Other half was in hard winters and spring wheat. Liverpool closed 21* to 2 s* pence higher. Corn lagged through the early session, paving little attention to the great strength in other grains but finally woke up and at the last prices were up sharply. The frost has apparently damaged com considerably the last few days and re ports confirming the same are coming in at the present. The demand for corn has broadened and premiums at the last were % cent higher. Oats encountered a much more active buying power throughout the session, rhe cheapness of this grain compared with all other grains has gradually attracted the biggest volume of support in months. Rye trade continued tremendous. Ex port absorption persisted on the way up while speculative buying was just as per sistent. . . Provisions fore very strong and advanc ed rapidly Lard was 40 to 60c h’.ghei and ribs were 46c higher. Pit Notes. From almost every quarter of the globe bull news on wheat was forthcoming, rhe strength in the Buenos Aires mart which was up about 6c in two days, was due partlv to the spread of locusts, which it was ’feared would damage the growing wheat crop. The southern hemisphere also noted a livelier foreign demand and intimated that remaining stocks were dwindling rapidly Cheapness of future wheat at Liverpool lompared with the ac tual grain there attracted liberal specu lative buying. . The movement of Canadian wheat la being delaved considerably as well as late threshing by unfavorable weather condi tions. Rains were scattered over the Ca nadian northwest today and receipts Winnipeg were half of last year s There was heavy buying of futures in the Canadian market against big export •ales to the United Kingdom. Demand for cash wheat in points was active and prices were lifted with the futures. The shipments out terminals are gradually broadening, ports from the Pacific coast said that conditions were favorable for an MTiy entry of the Orient into thf e*P"rt ?2{Lr* ket The Bhnrtage of Hep and r price* In the Orient should soon develop a demand for wheat and flour . , Tt !» quite likely that a world shortage of wheat w S develop later on In the crop tea son Europe has been coming *hR • United State., surplus In for several months and If the '"J1,, tlnue at the present rate °Vr Drobablv be under eontract by the turn the' rear.
