_ 14—A Slaver to Be » Returned to Mount Vernon Parlor of Ina Love Pacl Wants to Live: Will Throw Him self on Mercy of Court. Ty HARKV K. KKI TLINOER. Internntiotinl \'rw • Spnlrp Special t or res [Mimlcnt. Mount Vernon. 111., Sept. 27.—Over whelming desire to live 1ms come over Uev. Lawrence M. llisht, who not only poisoned his wife to death, hut conspired with Mrs. Elsie -Sweetin to destroy her husband, Wilford, with the same potion. The slayer, who was expelled from his church yesterday, quietly sits in the dilapidated White county jail at r — ' tarbonilale. III., Sepl. 27— Lawrence M. Hight of lull, no longer bears the prefix reverend for he was deprived of his title by the ‘‘elert number” of the southern Illinois conference of the Mefhodlst Episcopal church in ses sion here yesterday. He lost his title after a church trial on a charge of murder, pre ferred In connection with the poisoning of his wife and of Wil ford Sweetin, a member of his last charge, who became the vic tims of the confessed plot be tween the former minister and Mrs. Elsie Sweetin in order that the survivors might be married, x_ J Nashville, 111., still believing he has a useful life to live and fears greatly to think of what the future holds in store for him. “Yes,” said the clergyman, with h(* hands sunk deeply in his trouser , pockets. “I want to' live more than ever. I'm sorry—so sorry—for what I’Vb done. But I want to live. 1 wu always, until recently, a good main. I never sinned before. I just can't tell how It happened or what brought It about.” Probe Parson Slayings. State's Attorney Frank Thompson, however, is not to eure that the pas tor of* Ina has led an exemplary Ctoisria-n life. Today he started a cofpprAhensive investigation. Back, way back, Into the life of the minis ter the Investigators of Jefferson county started to delve. First they sought from elders of th^Methodist faith a complete ltlner i arySof the pastor's route of travel and thq’churches in which he conducted services. Rumors flew thick and fast aniC the substance was that all has no£ • been serene In the ecclesiastical life! of the condemned pastor. The prosecutor thought this to be of the greatest value and ordered his men to make the most searching investiga tion. | From early Indications ths pastor will throw himself on the mercy of th«. court and ask for as lenient a sentence as possible. Mitigating cir cu4>stqnyes will be introduced. That is •{vhji-'tha prosecutor evinced so nttidh interest in the story told by a native' of Dahlgren, 111. He said that a scandal ensued while Pastor Hight was in charge of the church at Dahl gren and that the Methodist board at that time considered removing him. Another individual later saw the Jefferson county prosecutor and stat ed 'that while driving the clergyman in his taxicab over near Centerville the defendant had told of his experi ments with arsenic and how he had lulled a dog with that poison. It was in that neighborhood that Grace Kl liott, high school girl, and a member of .Sight's flock, came to her death under what were said to have been j mysterious circumstances. I Three snapshots of this girl were found In the paetor'a parsonage, one of them taken with Hight. A com plete investigation Is being made of thg death of this Centerville girl three years ago. HJght was to be brought back to Mount Varnon late today. Interest, which at one time was at feverish height, has abated. THRELDAY LULL IN CHINESE WAR Shanghai, Sept. 27.—While the three-day lull In China’s civil war matured Into the fourth, unceasing preparations were continued for hos tilities. Opposing fronts around Shanghai all'-ward quiet early thli morning. HoEFeng-Lln, military commander of Shanghai, visited Nanslang, field supply base, last night, to assure him self- that the city’s defenses were as perfe.e.t as they could be made. Jfore artillery was moved to the fighting fronts last night and this morning and 2,000 soldiers were Bent to Nanslang that they might relieve the jad''d defenders in the first line. Reports from Knshlng, 72 miles to the.southwest by rail, said that forces Under Hun t'huan Fang, military gov ernor of Fukiep province, aad Ch en T'UaVuan, commanding the fifth miXi'd brigade of Klangsu province tr-etpH. were gathering there, intend ing.to strike for Hungklang. which is on)y 28 miles fryn Shanghai. p*e Want Ads are the best business Bossiers.
