“Silent" Carson, Bandit. Is Dead - / Evading Death Sentenre on Insanity Plea. He Was Dumb for 16 Years. Stockton, Cal.. Sept. 2G.— “Silent ' ’arson, former notorious bandit, is le^d. He died maintaining the silence he had preserved for 15 years and which had saved him from the gal lows. Charles Carson, whoso real name, w»i* Corcoran, had a long prison record beginning in New York when j t he was 0 years old. other terms in pi Ison followed. \\'Idle confined in ipe Folsom (Cal.) penitentiary in 1007, he was one of seven convicts who captured Captain J. R. Murphy and J*M{trd Jolly and used them aa shields fn an attempted escape Murphy and Jolly as well as all of thp convicts . were wounded, four of the prisoner* t fatally. Carson was sentenced to he hanged « for his part in this affair and in Sep l tember, 1900. while occupying a cell *• in the condemned row awaiting ex • *cution. he suddenly stopped talking. ' No intelligible word ever was heard to pass his lips again. * He was subjected to many tests hv alienists and finally in January, 1013, was declared insane and committed to the hospital for the insane here. Butler, chairman of the republican national committee, today issued a statement denying that republican leaders had anything to do with court action in California which resulted in barring l.a Follette presidential electors from a place in the independent progres sive column.
