jiei.d club land OVERESTIMATED Shotwell Say« County Has Advantageous Contract at Present. Abel V. Shotwell, former president of the Field club, eald Tuesday the county commissioners are greatly overestimating the amount of money that could be obtained by a sale of the 120 acres occupied by the club under lease of $900 a year from the county. "The commissioners think It would bring between $750,000 and $1,000, 000,’’ said Shotwell, "but men Inter ested In commercial development of building tracts tell me they could not pay more than $200,000 for the land. Extra Expense Heavy. "They say they would have to spend that much more to do necessary grad ing before a lot could be sold. There would be many advertising and othei expenses, streets would have to be graded, and the railroad track througn the land would render property for some distance on either side of little value for residences.” Shotwell pointed out that that part of the city has developed Into a good residential section largely because the Field club has kept up the tract through many years. It Is growing more valuable every year. ^ “Besides, it Is the only open space available for a park in that quarter of the city," he said. "When the time comes the city might buy it. Contract Advantageous. "For the present the county has ai advantageous contract with the Field club. The rental paid Is small, but the club keeps the tract beautiful, thus making all other property more valuable and enhancing the value of this 120 acres owned byethe county. ’ Shotwell said that In his opinion the club itself should pay a rental of about $8,000 a year a{ter the explra tlon of the present contract In 1930.
