Beal Examining Big Oil Swindle Thousands Cheated in Selling Game; Prosecutions May Follow. County Attorney Beal Is drawing the net about several men and a com pany alleged to have swindled thou sands of persons by an oil selling scheme worked In many communities In eastern Nebraska and South Da kota In the last two years. “They would go into a community and sell some of their oil and grease to half dozen well known citizens," said Beal. “They collected In ad vance and shipped the oil In due time. “Later, they would go Into the same community with high-powered sales men and sell a large quantity of their oil and grease on the pay-in advance and shlp-later plan. “Doubters were referred to local men who bought before and got the goods. They corroborated this when asked and so the salesmen cleaned up and the oil was never shipped.” Beal says he will go Into other counties and sign complaints if neces sary. His song was directed to all those who sought to question him concerning the outcome of the trial. He was in high good spirits. Leopold was somewhat more subdued. "Unless there is something in the statute demanding it, the Judge should not have wasted so much time.” District Judge Arthur C. Wakeley declared that in his opinion the pair should be hanged. Should Suffer Death. "This stuff about their not know ing what they did Is only bunk,” he said. "They knew and were respon sible and if anybody should suffer the death penalty these two should. "They do things differently in Eng land. This summer while I was there I saw the verdict returned on a man named Mahon Jn a small place 30 miles from London. He was quickly found guilty of the brutal murder of a girl in a cottage where he had taken her. Arguments Too Long. "The verdict being returned, the Judge immediately put on a little black cap and sentenced Mahon to 'hang by the neck until dead.' He appealed, hut the higher court upheld the Jury's verdict, and I think he has already suffered his punishment," “I would not have tolerated such long arguments in the case,” said District Judge Leslie, "though I would have received the testimony, because a Judge should be advised of the characteristics and mental atti tude of the defendants particularly In view of the fact they are minors.” EXPRESS LEAVES RAILS; 40 DEAD Bj Associated Press.
