General Selling Carries Wheat Prices Down nticipation of Bigprr Crop Sends Longs to Cover; Other Grains Down. By CHARLES j. I.EVDEf. I nlvmnl Spnlre staff Correspondent. Chicago, Aug. 23 —Extensive liquida - n of grain futures continued today In ! I pit* and further sharp losses were i talned. In wheat the selling wait neral. Realization that the North \rnerican crops are much larger than In • Hted two months aVo when the bull mvement started and that the American • nd Canadian spring wheat Is about ■ adjr for the market led to the great nve of liquidation that flooded the pit during the week. Wheat, closed l%Q2%c lower, corn as 1H 5c lower, oat* were 2%02*%c down and rye ruled 2V4®3c off. I.ones were panicky during the first onr in their eagerness to unload Corn 5 'upped mpre easily than wheat, the lat t grain meeting good buying for export count on the dips. But the selling that ’•slated overcame all obstacles until rices bad been lowered 4c. Thereafter ■'ek-end covering brought about a flurry t the hell, but it was not impressive. Export sales in all posltiona were '•iced at 2.0^0,000 bushels wheat and °.000 bush'd* rve During the last dree days sales of 0,000,000 to 7.000.000 ’shela wheat were made. Winnipeg ired late of a "great." export business, '’orn was weak all day. Short cover ng was the only buying that sustained v"' market on the break. Weather con tfons over the corn belt have Improved mterlaily the last week and the weekly •recast was for temperatures above nor i.»l for the first part of next week with •oler temperatures for tho balance of the oek. <>ats sold off with other grains. Tdqui ’ it ion was too much for the feeble buying •wer to withstand and prices dropped • dly. The demand for spot oats at the id of the week turned less aggressive d premiums easfd J*o. Kye broke with other grains Scattered liing in the way of liquidation carried • market down. Provisions slumped. T.ard was 37*4,(71 -*>c lower and ribs were 10® 20c lowen Pit Notes. Slnog July 1 there have been over ■ 000 bushels wheat received In the rimary market* of this country, this • mparlng with 87.000.000 bushels a ;<r ago. On top of thia is the be "f that the American spring wheat' mvement within the next few weeks will heavy also. Europe has been taking heat on the breaks in great style, but • * been shunning the market on the ilvsncp, There is no question but that wheat "PPlie* for the next few months will •iple for foreign needs. Europe no doubt II have to buy considerably more wheat fhan a year ago. hut at present prices reijn buyers will hold back as long as sslble. Cutting of wheat in Canada is pected to be general by the first of ’•ptember. The weather forecast for Canada was iir and warmer. Crop prospects in that •untry have improved the last few weeks nd the local trade is expecting the har -st to total at least 300,000,000 buahela beat. With a possible 35o.O00.OQ0 bush s total crop in the state* the world oortage theories are not likely to mi eiialize until jater on In the season. The reaction that ha* occurred in the heat pit the past week was a perfectly •tural one. Prices had advanced 35c two months in the far# of one of the »at rat primary movements on record. Lo possibility of a much shorter crop Canada, compared with list year wns j of tho Influences that helped the beat market to advance, offsetting the bile the movement of actual grain to • rket in this country. But the market as got to the point now where more uyers must be obtained. CHICAGO CASH FIHCF®. Fy I'pJIke drain fompany, Atlantic 5312, _I Open. I With. I Low. I Clo.e. lYeit'v. .'lit. I'nlversnl Service Finn m ini 1*^11for. New Vork. Aug. 23—While there was a continuation in today's stock market oT the liquldat Ion of the previous f*w | days the pressure was much leas pro- i nnunred and the resistance greater. There was no symmetry to the move ment. Some of the rails gave ground while others, notably St Paul, made good 1 rceovetles. American Can. Baldwin and Cast Iron Pipe again were lower, hut United States Steel showed hard to de press. Asaoclated Dry Goods, on a mod erate volume of trading had a good deal of action, swinging between 113% and 120%. and closing at 117%, which waa 3% up for the day. There waa no definite character to the market. Some of the motors were up and some down Some of the oils were up and sortie down, hut, the changes were not Important. Maxwell was. per haps. the strongest In the motor group. The tobaccos u-ere strong and the cop pers fairly ateady. At no tlma In the aesalon was there much activity Transactions for the day aggregated 414.100 shares Rails declined on an average of about % of a point and industrials about % of a point Foreign exchange was slightly lower. If was another day of falling prices In the grain markets iyhe*t was weak and corn wan weaker.. Oafs Buffered a considerable loss and rye hud more of a loss than oats Wheat now is off about 10c a bushel in a week. Some operators who were over-enthus iastic and were caught in the sharp de cline of the last week ascribe the se vere reaction to the over-eagerness pf the grain growers to gather profits. Foreign demand was good and exports were on a large scale but winter wheat came on the market In greater volume than expected. Vnrlous of the t'anadl&n elevators, particularly those at Montreal, are said to be < hoked with grain. Prices now being lower, market senti ment, of course. 1s bearish. Jt always la after auch a happening Meanwhile export demand continues good and there ia no change In the sta tistical situation, which Is strongly bul lish. but market advices probably will continue to be of a be.arlsh tone until there is a rally and then the same old bullish arguments will be made. The net result of Saturday's market was a de. Hne 2% to 2%r in when, 1% to 3%c in corn. 2 % to 2%c in oats and 2% to 3c in rye. Cotton, with only ore hour and 45 min utes of a session and the bureau report coming nut 1 J* minutes after the close of the market, was tather quiet. --■- \ | New York Quotations | New York Stock exchange quotations furnished by .1 8 Barhe A Co. 224 Omaha National Bank building Frl.
