11,000 Autos on Roads of Dodsfe County Sunday Census Taken by Federal and State Officers—Only 14 Horse-Drawn Vehicles. Special Dispatch to The Omaha Bee. Fremont, Neb., Aug. 18.—An actual check by census takers Sunday show ed that 10,904 vehicles traveled on state highways In Dodge county be tween the hours of 6 a. m. and 9 p. m. The census was taken in co-opera tion with the federal government col lecting data on 'road construction. Of this number, 4.272 cars were from Dodge county', 5,603 cars from outstate, mostly from Omaha, and 927 autos from other states. There were 84 trucks enumerated, and a to tal of 14 horse-drawn vehicles. The heaviest travel was on the Lin coln highway, where George F. Wolz, state consul of the Lincoln Highway association, was in charge of the cen sus takers. They were stationed about five miles eact of Fremont at the junction of the highway and the Elk City road, where Wolz sought to compare the difference In travel. His group of census takers counted 4.192 cars at this junction of these two paved roads and of this total 3,248 were either Dodge or Douglas county cars. Only one horse-drawn vehicle ven tured on this auto infested highway. It developed, however, that the mo torists were nearly equally divided in their choice of roads between the Lin coln highway and the Elk City road. There were 1,348 Douglas county cars journeying on the Elk City road, while 1,194 favored the Lincoln high way. Twenty-five states were repre sented In the data gathered, with Iowa cars the most frequent. On the Cornhusker highway census takers at the Platte river bridge south of Fremont counted 1,505 ve hicles. The six-mile stretch of pave ment, Fremont to Ames, brought out 2,095 cars. On the B line road 380 vehicles were recorded. NO CAUSE FOUND I FOR TEXAS FIRE Houston, Tex., Aug. 18.—Cause of the fire that early this morning gut ted the eight-story Settegast building here with a loss pf more than $200, 000, Is a mystery according to' city officials. The first three floors and the two |b upper stories were badly damaged by the flames, which smoldered all day. No fire had been started in the build ing Sunday and only a few of the tenants are believed to have visited it all day. The possibility that a care lessly thrown cigaret or cigar or de fectlve wiring may have caused the blaze was the only explanation ad vanced by officials. No Investigation will be made, it was said. Five firemen were injured. Three were badly cut when a large plate glass window fell on them and two were burned when they came in con tact with live wires. Explosion of gunpowder in a hard ware store on the ground floor added to the danger, but no one was In jured by the blast. WOMAN TAKES LYE BY MISTAKE; DIES Special IH*patch to Tile Omaha Bee.
