’ LIBOR IN BUTTLE FOR LAFOLLETTE .Trade Union Groups Organ ize for Spirited Campaign in His Behalf. By KENNETH CLARK. International New* Staff Correspondent. Atlantic City, N. J„ Aug. 4.—J Labor's fight to put Robert M. Lsj Follette In the White House Is on. f The executive council of the Amer ican Federation of Labor In sessioh here today decided to organize thf? most vigorous political campaign ever attempted by the trade union grours of this country, behind the tick: t headed by La Folette and Senati r Wheeler. Orders are to be Issued which w 11 press Into the campaign each of tl 10 3,000,000 members of #the federate n In every city. Speakers will tour t ie country and tons of literature in l e half of labor's presidential choice will be distributed. Hawes Rapped. . The report formally announcing endorsement of La Follette is a co tv plete atatement of lahor'g political views. It condemns the republic in and democratic platforms along w th the republican and democrat caridl dates. It points especially to Charles O. Dawes, republican vice presidential m candidate as “one of the most out ’ spoken enemies of labor and founder of an organization dedicated to the task of writing Into all political plat forms planks calling for an anti-union shop, a movement which has long been opposed by the federation.” The LaFollette platform Is sane tloned as regards domestic Issues and reservation is made only under the ivaFollette foreign policy In opposi tion to the league of nations and the International court of justice at The Hague. Points which the report says La Follette boldly stands for In his plat form Include: Free Press. Free assembly, free speech and free press—the right of labor to organize and collectively to cease to work: abolition of the railroad labor board, restriction of the power of the su preme court; direct elections of presi dents and ratification of the child labor amendment. “We cannot do otherwise than point out this fact, together with the fur ther and perhaps more Important fact that the candidates, LaFollette and Wheeler, have throughout their whole political careers, stood steadfast In defense of the rights and interests of the wage earners and the farmers," the report says. _i Mrs, Beunita Henkel Dies. Butler Measures Up to Klan Test, Says His Gubernatorial Promoter City Commissioner D. B. Butler, who le being mentioned as candidate for governor on the T.a Follette ticket, measures up to the Ku Klux Klan re quirements of law enforcement, ac cording to W. H. Green, one of the founders of the progressive party in Nebraska and at present backing But ler aa a La Folletto candidate. C. A. Sorenson of Lincoln and Green are In a contest for control nt the progresaive conference to be held at Grand Island. Sorenson was quoted as saying that the entrance of Butler Into the gubernatorial race Injecta the Ku Klux Klan and the liquor Issue squarely Into Nebraska politics. "Butler Is wet, snd has dry sup port," was a statement made last Saturday by Green, who Is the prin cipal promoter of Butler. "Butler told me n few days ago that he Is 100 per cent for La Follette," Green added. A statement prepared by Green Monday follows In part: “C. A. Sorenson Is quoted ss say ing ‘I want to say now that by making Butler a gubernatorial eandl date It lnjeets the Ku Kluk Klan and the booze Issue squarely Into Ne braska polities.' "This Is a threat of dirty politics. However, I have not purchased any white kid gloves for this campaign. Griffith's picture gives the lie direct to Longfellow's poem on the ride, for while the poet stated that ‘‘Hardly a man now alive remembers that famous date and year," the vociferous applause which greets the picture shows that women and children as well as men remember Paul, his steed, and the occasion of their journey. /-- - ' Out of the Records. ^/ Births and Deaths.
