Dear Martha Allen: When you have a sweetheart you really love and he tells you he loves you, also asks you to be his wife, but you don’t give any definite answer because he’s so funny sometimes, you don’t know how to take him, what would you do? Here Is how he Is funny. He has two sisters. I have two brothers. Mostly we all always go together; then he hardly ever asks me for a date, just takes everything for grant ed. When we are together then, of course, he’s nice, takes me every place and does anything, but again, at home he doesn’t say a thing about seeing me again. Doesn’t he care If he does or not. He says he sure doe#, but his folks are a bit strict and he can't go without his sisters, so—but couldn’t he say something, why , desn’t he tell me I'll try and see you than let's all go there or something like that. No, he doesn’t, he's ao queer that way, always leaves It all to us girls; my brother talks more to his sister about It. Yet I know he loves me. He's so nice always and never says some of the mean things to me my brother says to his sister when they get mad. I get mad often and won't look at him; then he’ll do any thing for me and how bad he feels and asks me to forgive him, but he can't break himself, though. What should I do? Why doesn’t he try hard to be with me? He says there Isn't a minute In the day he doesn’t think of me. I know it’s his nature not to talk over things much, for hla sisters tell me he's always pretty quiet, even at home. . I know that It Isn’t that I throw myself at his head either, for I don’t. Once I went with my other broth er to a different town because, as usual, this boy hadn't said anything about seeing me, and he followed me way up there, although It waa 40 miles. Of course he had to bring hla sisters, but he coaxed and coaxed me to go back with him, bought me auch a lovely big box of chocolates and I just couldn’t refuse; but often already I did not go with him at all, and then he’d tell me how he felt, but he can’t really ever say for sure about the car. This boy Is almost 21, I'm a year older. We have been going to gether like that for four years. What would you do, Martha Allen? I think If I really cared for thla boy and felt as sure as you aeem to. that he cared for me, I’d be rather glad that his parent* were strict with him, that he was kind to his sisters and not too hasty with words of love. You are the true feminine in want ing to be coaxed and reassured of the i man's love, but that will come In time 1 if your friendship grows. You might suggest, tactfully, some time, that you Ilk# to know when to ;[ expert him, or that you like to plan : your engagements ahead. It Isn't quite fair to a girl when a boy takes her time for granted. Harry Underwood's warning mes lage to Lillian concerning the matter of the furs so coincided with my own feelings on the subject that I stared it him frankly, forgetting to with draw my hand from the restraining clasp with which he had enfolded It. "So you think that, too," I said •lowly. "Aha!" His eyes gleamed as they held mine. "I thought, somehow, you weren't quite so trustful of the Mark menage as Lillian appears to be. What’s the reason for your being a doubting Thomas?" But I closed my lips firmly. 1 have seen Lillian at work many, many times and never have I known her to make a mistake in judging people correctly. Besides I had no knowledge of Lillian’s real senti ments. I had no right to discuss her with this man, who had failed her so signally, even though I knew that his Inquiry sprang only from the desire to aid her. Gamma Mu Parties. Picnic-Bridge. Mrs. J. Willard Green and Mies Eunice Fike entertained 12 guests at i picnic luncheon at Fontenelle park today In honor of Mrs. Mason Zerbe, a recent bride. Following the luncheon the guests played bridge at the home of Mrs. Green. Into Harry Underwood’* eye* came a pin-point glint which I knew of old spelled displeasure. ‘‘You needn’t purse your lips so tightly,” he said a bit huffily. "No body’s going to pry ’em open. I un derstand. ‘The queen can do no wrong’ is your motto, and you are ready to hebuke the knave who dare commit treason by doubting her. Nevertheless, my dear, you have qualms yourself, and if I were in your place I’d watch proceedings very carefully, so that if the time comes when your lioness needs the cords around her gnawed you'll be ready." The smile I gave his speech was a bit twisted. His comparison was not one to appeal to my vanity, although I often had made a similar one. But I did not wish Mr. Underwood to guess he had disturbed me, and I therefore resisted the Impulse which swept me to snatch my hand away from the clasp which I had forgotten in my Interest in the topic he was discussing. Instead I replied with dis arming demureness: The Harrises Hosts. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Harris will entertain at dinner at Happy Hollow this evening for Misses Bert Fuller of Quincy, 111., and Marcella Schneider of Milwaukee, guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Allgaler. To my astonishment he burst Into a hearty laugh while the displeasure vanished from his face as if by magic, and hla clasp upon my hand tight ened. I made a decided effort to pull It way, but found It Impossible, while Mr. Underwood's eyes laughed au daciously down at me. "I need this hand for a minute or two,” he said, ”so you might as well be patient. But let me relieve your mind. I had no Idea of Intimating that you are only a mental mouse compared with Lillian. It was your own attitude toward her that I was Illustrating. So say you forgive me before I escort you upstairs, but also let me assure you that nothing would Induce me to give any unsolicited advice to old Lil." He paused with a reminiscent twin kle In his eye and I guessed that he was remembering some of the spirit ed arguments that used to convulse the friends of the Underwoods in the nld days.
