^ Adele Garrison L “My Husband's Love"’ _ _' •Omi Message Harvey Vnderwoml Sent to Lillian. Sympathy was the last emotion I ever expected to feel for Harry Vnderwood. Since our first meeting, between the acts of a play, Dicky and I attended just after our honeymoon, this recreant husband of Lillian s al ternately has repelled and fascinated me. I have admired him, despised him, been furiously angry at him, felt gratitude for his strength and resoucefulness which have been spent magnificently in my service in a num ber of instances when I sorely needed them, but he has never appealed to mv sympathies. ■ s Baby Week at Thorne’s Store-Wide C-l-e-a-r-a-n-c-e One-tenth of amount you buy thle week to swell the Free Milk and fee fund in your name. F. W. Thorne Co. 1812 Farnam St. » V —. i-n^ w __ Suddenly, however. beneath the handinage—indeed the apparently cal lous crudeness—of his message to Lil lian, I seemed to see for an instant an incredibly lonely figure, who, for some reason, meant to cherish his Isolation. I was sure of one thing, however, Tie did not wish sympathy even if his allusions to his feeling for me had not made my proffer of it impossible. There was but one thing for me to ■ay. "I will deliver your messages to Lillian," I said reluctantly. "Al though you must believe me, she sent no such message to you as you have inferred. She did want me to find out if possible if you were— I Stopped at sight of the grin that crept over his face. Clearly what ever of regret or sadness the last few minutes of Introspection had held for him, all such emotion had now van ished from his mind and he was hjfi old mocking self again. For the first time in an hour I bbeathed freely. Harry Underwood in a mocking mood I knew and understood. But the man of the last few minutes I did not un derstand at all. although I had with in me that shamefaced consciousness that if I dared I should have liked to try comprehending his serious mood. "What a conscience ridden little Puritan it is!-’ Mr. Underwood said teasingl.v. 'She wants to get every T dotted and ’t’ crossed, doesn't she? Well, to ease your mind, let me as sert solemnly now that you haven't given me any message from Lillian, nor have I received one except from the astral sphere, or whatever you call it. And as for what she wanted you to find out—too much knowledge isn't good for women, you know. You have read what happened to Eve, haven't you?” I shrugged my shoulders philo sophically. I had failed in my effort lo take to Lillian the information she wished, but after all. X told myself grimly, I could not take the man -by the throat and choke his secret* from him. There was no need, how ever, for him to guess my chagrin and I smiled saucily back at hint. "Also Adam,” I retored. "But I have one bit of knowledge which I'm going to pass on to you. X m too sleepy to be good company any long er, so if you'll take me back to Lil lian—” "I see.” he said slowly. “That's to be part of my punishment, curtailing my evening in this fashion. Don't you know a little girl with eyes and lips like yours has no right to be cruel? He bent his head courteously. "As you wish,” he said with a touch of the formality which he can use so effectively when he so wishes. Then he beckoned to the waiter who hurried to his side. “Check, please," he ordered, and in less than five minutes we were again in the luxurious limousine and the man, Pete, was whirling us through the streets back to the apartment.
