Today] Figs Come, Flying. Welcome, Prize Fighters. Mixed News. Wheat Again. By ARTHUR BRISBANE ^ . - ,. / From N. H. Sloane, general man ager of the California Development association, this writer received on Thursday a letter by flying ma chine, and with it a box of ripe California figs, picked in California at 5 Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Sloane Bays: “Mayor Hylan now here says figs have not been delivered in per fect condition in New York. Cali fornia will develop the great com mercial flying machine by its en deavor to put ripe and perishable fruit upon the tables of New York.” U.S. Would Make Vassal of Europe, Communists Say American Capital Dictating to Allies at Conference, Reds Declare—“On With Proletarian Revolution.” By AiawMtd Press. Moscow, July 27.—In the course of a long, severely critical and flamboy ant pronouncement touching on the anniversary of the outbreak of the world war and the conference in Lon don, the executive committee of the communist International says that all the countries represented at the con ference expect salvation through In tercession of the United States. "But,” the statement adds, "the United States Itself Is beset with an agrarian crisis, 2,000,000 farmers throwing away their plots of ground and the shadow of economic catas trophe Is knocking at Its door. "America's internal market Is be ing curtailed more and more. Ruined and exhausted, Europe cannot absorb America's goods, while In South America, the United States is finding an Increasingly narrow scope for its capital. Mr. Morgan is dictating to the United States and In the name of the United States, General Dawes and Secretary Hughes are dictating to Europe. “U. S. Most Avaricious.” “One of the first results of a demo cratic pacifist era will be the coming of a dictatorship of American capi tal, which aims to transform Europe Into a vassal colony. "The English labor government and the left bloc in France are serving as a curtain for this dictatorship. "After four years of fruitless wrangling on the reparations prob lem, the United States, the most ter rible and avaricious participant in the war, enters the European arena ready with its European allies to strangle the German proletariat and transform Germany into an interna tional colony for the machinations and exploitations of the robbers of all countries. Has Record of Credit Accounts to Keep Purchaser Within Limit Calls for credit have Increased 26 per cent during the last three months and cash buying Is getting old-fash ioned, as most all consumers are opening charge accounts, says J. J. Cameron of the J. J. Cameron Credit Bureau, 218 Lefiang building. This does not mean that they are not paying their hills, but It does in dicate that the people are taking ad vantage of accommodations and serv ice for convenience, Mr. Cameron states. On the other hand, merchants encourage credit and consider prompt pay customers more profitable on ac count of receiving most of their trade and a larger purchase when ordering. Instead of small orders frequently when paying cash, says Mr. Cameron. One of the worst features of this rapidly growing demand for credit Is that customers are apt to run charge accounts at too many stores and their monthly Income will not go around to pay all bills and the merchant or credit man is quite often at a loss to know how far to let accounts run unless full Information Is at hand to pass on the account, says Cameron. On account of these conditions the J. J. Cameron Credit Bureau Is an exceedingly busy office as all accounts from the various stores are Kept on their records and merchants In every , line of trade In the city use this In- « formation when charge accounts are opened. This has also proved a valuable service for the consumer as It pro tects him from going beyond his means, which eventually would ruin his credit reputation. Mr. Cameron says that credit Is the most valuable asset a salaried man or wage earner can have and should be protected as much as a bank account and states that the credit Information Issued from the J. J. Cameron Credit Bureau protects both the dealer and the applicant for credit. / 11 < Brakes Relined With Raybestos | A new brake-relining machine has been in stalled. I turned upon Harry Underwood furiously, wondering the while whether I had heard aright his slight ing speech concerning Lillian and his aversion to "apron strings.” "If you imagine for one second,” I began, “that^Lillian wishes you-” He put up' his hand lazily, but there was in the gesture and the look in his face something that checked my impetuous rush of words. “I’m not quite such a cad," he said sternly. "I know, as you do, that Lillian never cared for me in that way any more than I had any wild, romantic emotion for her. We were a couple of derelicts washed up by a tide of circumstances on a shore most inhospitable, and by joining our lives we managed to en joy life quite comfortably for a num ber of years. That was all right as long as neither of us got batty over anybody else. “But after I saw—never mind, I won’t trouble you with that just now —and old Lil found out that the lost love of her romantic youth had come to life again in the person of that paragon of old pappy guys, Robert Savarln, it would be—well —call it sacrilege—for us to go on. “I haven't much reverence or de cency in me,” he declared, "but I’ve got too much to pose as a faithful husband, when all the time what heart I have is in another woman’s keeping, and I know that Lil feels the same way. But that ingrowing conscience of hers would lead her barefoot over hot plowshares, and I know without your telling me. that she’s got some kind of bee in her bonnet concerning the influence she could have over me for good, if she chucked all thought of the tempera mental artist gink, and 'took up with me again,' as old Betty would say.” Madge Is Annoyed. The Impudence of him. With in ordinate vanity I passed over for future consideration every part of his speech except the phrasing beginning "after I saw—ynever mind—" I knew what he meant, and knew that he meant me to know the thing he was Inferring—that he had deserted Lil lian because he cherished a secret affection for me. This from the man who had taken Grace Draper to South America, and later been as a tool in her hands when she concocted the plot which so nearly resulted in Dicky's death. If I had taken one second for re flection. I should have betrayed my comprehension of his meaning. But my anger both for Lillian and myself made me rush into speech. "How dare you infer that I was the cause—of—oh. Do you think Lil lian and I have forgotten that trip to South America and Grace Dr-” “I Must Go I'nhindred!" "Stop'right there!” His voice was like a whiplash apd never had I seen his face so dark with anger. "How dare you mention your name and that woman's in the same breath. But then—" his voice changing from anger to sardonic resignation—“that's only what I've always maintained. For absolute lack of comprehension of a man’s actions or motives, com mend me to a good woman." I did not know at which I were more angry, myself for my betraying impetuosity, or him for his affront ery. I had regained enough com mand over myself, however, to keep absolutely silent and, after a second's pause, Mr. Underwood went on. "But that's neither here nor yet there. What you want is a set of answers to carry back to old Lil. and I’ll try to give them to you In order." He took a tiny pencil from his coat and held it poised above the menu card. "First," he said breezily, "Am I a bootlegger? Just deliver this mes sage verbatim to your old friend; 'The defendant refuses to answer on the ground that It might incriminate or degrade him.' " His eyes, the minute before som ber and stein, were again dancing with mischief. "Second. Am I In need of a wifely Influence In my life, either typified by a rolling pin or r 'low sweet song Rt twlllght'7 The answer to that— be sure to get it down right—is— this-" He folded his arms, leaned back In his chair, and both mockery and sternness went out of his eyes. I saw that he really was trying to phrase a considerate yet decided re ply to the inferred message from Lillian. "I am deeply sensible of the honor —and the motive—and if things were —different—I would answer differ ently. But for everybody’s sake, I must go iny own way unhindered." About 30,000 concrete blocks ere being used In the construction of the above building at Sixteenth and Ohio streets. The building will be constructed en tirely of concrete blocks and brick veneer. This is a form of construc tion that is used very extensively In many parts of the United States, and In steadily gaining favor in Omaha. The double wall of brick and con crete block, and the additional air space in the two hole type block be irg used provide complete insulation which allows plastering to be applied direct to the inside of the 'concrete block wall. The Ideal Cement Stone company. Thirty-first and Spaulding streets, Iujb contracted for the construction of all the concrete Mock and brick veneer work. Concrete blocks are being used In backing up the brick veneer and for the partition walls and chimneys. Flying machines will bring perishable ripe fruits from California and Florida to those that can afford them. And, infinitely more important, flying machines will carry inhabitants in a few hours from all other parts of the United States to California, to Florida and to all the places that Americans ought to see. Mr. Siki, once a Senegalese sav age, hopping around the jungle in Africa, now a “distinguished prize fighter,” came to the United States, ^ leaving behind a young white wo man and their baby. He says he did not marry her. Another prize fighter, white, named Firpo,, arrived from South America, with a young woman called a “stenographer.” He comes in, she is deported. Why? The answer is simple. He will make $250,000 as his share of a $1,000,000 prize fight. Why shouldn’t he come in? President Coolidge might ask why immigration officials that separate mothers from their chil dren at Ellis Island welcome prize fighters, under conditions that should mean instant deportation? A republic that shuts out am bitious, respectable men and wo men, mechanics, farmers, mothers, children, and admits any prize fighters under any circumstances, has something the matter with it. How will the news of our day Jread to the future? Bethlehem Steel passes its divi dend—a combined pocket and heartache for many. Lazado, a Philipino murderer, is felectrocuted. He failed to kill a jailer with a club hidden in his pell. Twenty women are hurt In a bargain rush, trying to buy brooms for 1 cent apiece. j pm In Chile, an archaeologist dis covers a mummy, one of the royal Incas, 2,000 years old. It wore false hair. High Commissioner Samuel of Palestine reports excellent progress in the rebuilding of the Jewish •tate. An American has just gone over to start a -life insurance company. What part of all that is | news? * Russian reports show a shortage in the grain crop of 150,000,000 poods, nearly 3,000,000 tons of grain; The bolshevik government will spend fifteen millions to buy seed for farmers, other millions to feed the hungry. As far away as Russia, nature eeems to be waiting to help Cool idge by putting up the price of grain. In Chicago yesterday wheat and other grains again went up. If that continues it will be hard for the farmer to keep his mind on his troubles. Ogden L. Mills, prosperous youth, Campaigning for Coolidge, will ask this political question every day: “Why turn them out?t’ He will ask voters how they ex pect to do any better getting rid of Coolidge and taking in Davis. Mr. Mills should remember the illiterate Greek citizen voting to banish Aristides “Because I am tired of hearing him called ‘The Just.’” Many woters vote for a change just for the sake of a change. Our friends in Paris say “they suspect” that Secretary Hughes is In London “in the interest of Amer * 4can bankers.” How suspicious those Frenchman are. Soon they Will be suggesting that Thomas La mont of Morgan & Co. is in Lon don also in the interest of Ameri can bankers. The Salvation Army prison de Eartment requested from ehari ible ladies hats in good condition, not more than six weeks old, or money to buy new hats—for young women coming out of prison. It Beems—please don’t laugh—that if • woman comes out of jail with" a hat more than three months old It hurts her pride and “makes it difficult for her to re-establish her Belf-respect.” On Thursday night Georges Car pentier endured desperate punish ment without flinching. Americans of the 100 per cent red-blooded, he-man Nordic type, sometimes un derestimate the courage of French men and other Latins. They will learn something from CarpenUer’s willingness to take cruel punish ment. And Carpentier wasn’t teaching boxing in camp 3,000 miles from the war. He spent four years in the trenches, whence some fine “Nordic" prise fighters were safely absent. Charles M. Schwab will build six wheel trucks that won't wear out roads and will compete with rail roads for all but the very long haul freight. If Schwab undertakes it., he will do it. He needs something to take the place of battleship building and armor plate making. The United States treasury may Issue certificates paying only 2 per cent interest. That would be ex traordinary financing. Yet it would mean that Uncle Sam can borrow money as cheaply as it can be bor rowed today by any speculator in ■Wall street. Two per cent is the price of “call money.” Copyright, 1)11 “On With Revolution.’’ "The results of the present London conference will bring to the German workers a 12-hour day, dismissal of 50 per cent of the railway workers, curtailment of the state employes, Im position of heavy taxes, Increased cus toms and railroad tariffs and high prices.
