The eve of the championships, which Includes 26 events, finds the camps of the two outstanding con tenders confident but a tnajorlty of observers is convinced that the all around team strength of the Amer icans will carry them through to - victory once more. Knahlea Winner to Cap ture Championship— Wins Two of Three. Hr Associated Prw« Wimbledon, Eng., July 4 —Vie* Helen Will*. American woman lawn i tennis champion, was defeated today * In the Wimbledon tournament final | by Mis* Kathleen McKane, ranking British woman player, who won 4 6, 14, 6 4, capturing the tournament championship in the woman's sin gles. Mias McKane, by defeating Miss Wills in a three-set match in which the honor* were almost evenly di vided, attained the title whi< h Mile. Suzanne I-englen of France had held againet the opposition of the world since the war. The slight advantage whch the English girl held over her America 1%^ rival was in the more deadly strok- _ lng from dose to the net. It was " thi* that enabled her to win the championship. The real margin be tween the two players seemed to lie in the fact that Miss McKane was audacious while Miss Wills was cauti oua. From first to last the pace was tre mendously keen. Miss Wills appeared far speedier both with racquet and with foot than she did on any previ ous appearance in Great Erttain, but she was not a* quick-limbed as the slimmer built Miss McKane who. be cause Miss Wills failed to smash hard at the net. was aijle to pick up many of the American's' volleys. • The English girl, on the contrary, usually put point# In her favor with ; hard ungettable swipes at the ball whenever she caught it near thg net. From back court to mid-court ther^ * was little to choose between the two player*.
