I III EFFECT TODAY Extra Precautions Planned to Prevent Smuggling in of Orientals. • Washington, July 1.—Japanese and other orientala are barred from the United State* under the n*w Immi gration law which went into effect at 12:01 this morning. Despite the protests of Japan against the terms of the law, immigration officials of the Department of Labor expect the Japanese officials to co-operate with a view to the strict enforcement of the new restrictive provisions. Extra precautions will be taken, however, at Pacific ports to keep orientals from being smuggled In in violation' of the law. The entry of approximately 162, 000 aliens Into this country during the fiscal year beginning today is pro vided for In the new Immigration regulations. Last year 358,000 were admitted. The quotas of all foreign countries were fixed in a proclamation issued by President Coolldge, the figures being determined on the basis of 2 1 per cent of the number of nationals which each country had in the United • States in 1890. His resignation was accepted by the president with reluctance and with a warmly expressed appreciation of services. _ - : :Wa . -' -.. Edward Await Denies He In vited Mae Amstutz to Marriage Altar. Edward Await, 4224 Erskine street, accused of being the father of the child of Mae Amstutz, 6846 Ohio street, declared on the witness stand before District Judge Fitzgerald Tues day that he did not ask the girl to marry him. She said he met her In 1920 at a moving picture house in Benson, where she was the ticket taker, and that he proposed marriage about the following Christmas. She was filling two positions at that time, working during the day in the city and at night in the moving picture house, and, she said, she advised postponing the nuptials till they were financially able to set up housekeeping. Await, who is 20, admitted his re lations with the girl, but denied that the child is his. “Didn’t you ever ask her to marry you?" asked her attorney. “No, sir,” said Await. "Ever tell her you loved her?’’ "No. sir.” “What did you talk about?” This question was overruled. Await said he “hasn’t slept well the last three weeks.” He declared he is threatened with tuberculosis. The child was born April 4, 1924. Chicago, July 1.—When beautiful Alyse Moore, 24, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Foley, wealthy Chicago family, wept In court here today and declared she would not live with her husband, Joseph C. Moore of Sioux City, Judge Thomas J. Lynch dismissed Moore's petition for a writ of heabas corpus. Her husband had sought to remove her from custody of her parents. Mrs. Moore has sued for annul ment, hearing on which will be held later. She declared she was coerced into the marriage after an all night automobile ride in Iowa, the night of June 16 last. The young husband, dazed by the court's decision, lost no time in strik ing back again. This time, his at torneys filed the preclpne for a suit for $250,000 against the bride's par ents, charging alienation of affec tions. Moore also announced he would file Immediately an answer to his bride’s suit for annulment. “GAS” PRICE HERE IS UNCHANGED Gasoline prices remained stationary at Omaha oil stations Tuesday, ex cepting at the Mihiel station. Eight eenth arid Izard streets, one of the cut-price places, where the price was raised from 13 to 1314 cents per gallon. City Commissioner John Hopkins announced that that he would con tinue to sell at 13 cents at the Muny station as long as his present supply lasts. He stated that he had two carloads at refineries purchased at a price to enable a 13-cent retail price unless the refineries raised the price before delivering here.
