Wheat Sells Off Early and Then Rallies Brisklv J Close Is Moderately Higher— Corn Advances Well in Response to Unfavorable Crop Reports. By CHARI.ES J. I.EADEN. Universal Service Staff Correspondent. (’hl<ago, June 23.—Wheat add oft sharply early today, and then rallied briskly, largely In sympathy with Win nipeg The close was moderately higher. Corn offered more excitement, advancing well in response to unfavorable crop re ports and cumulative strength in the rush situation. July corn reached & new high level for the year. Wheat dosed higher, corn was lV4®2c higher, oats were M ©He ad vanced and rye ruled up. The character of the wheat buying on the Initial setback was not as influential ns recently, but It sufficed to stabilize prices. From the high point of laat week, the market had reacted over Be. and developed the while a fair sized short interest. Winnipeg finished 4‘*c over the Chicago July, compared with 33*0 over on Saturday. Corn was strong throughout Heavy rains over the belt were not especially required at this time, and did some dam age in spots. Crop news from the north west was unusually pessimistic. Corn In that territory Is said to be several weeks behind schedule in growth and is gen erally weedy. Oats trade was fairly active, with prices higher. Commission houses were on both sides of the market. Rye dropped early and then rallied. Late buying was due to rust reports coming from the southwest. Provisions were irregular. Lard was unchanged to 5c higher and ribs were o @10c lower. Pit Notes. Messages from Winnipeg today com mented on the generally poor condition of the growing wheat crop, due mostly to the backward, cool season. The local trade had been of the belief that Cana dian prospects hud improved some, but according to most reports the strength in Winnipeg was due to the anticipation of a very bullish crop report, to he is sued bv the Canadian Free Press today. In Canada this report is given as much credence as our government report. Black stem rust was reported present on quack grass in the northwest, the strain of rust that generally hits rye hardest. The trade, however, regarded this news just as bullish on wheat as rye, and there was considerable buying of futures on this account. It was quite ap parent that profit taking whs in abund ance on the swells, and many thought that the recovery in prices was not im pre*si\e enough, considering the marked stability in Canada. Foreign crop news was pessimistic on the whole, but was offset somewhat by reports of heavy liquidation in the United Kingdom, owing to liberal and cheaper offerings of southern hemisphere wheat. Cables bad it that crop prospe. ts in eastern and southeast Europe were far from flattering. The United States visible, as expected, showed a good decrease of 1,452,000 bush els for the week. Lowering of stocks in the northwest is more pronounced than at any other point. A private expert is sued a statement to the effect that total stocks of wheat as of July 1 on the farms, and in country mill and elevators were about 7.000,000 bushels less than a year ago. This about offsets the In crease of 9.000.000 bushels in the visible supply, compared with last year at this time. CHICAGO CASH PRICES. By Updike Grain company, Atlantic <1U. Art._I Open.
