Grows Tighter as Season Advancer Joe McDermott, Manager of Cards, Leads Loop in Bat ting—Four l-to-0 Games Played. Sioux City, la., June 22.—The last week for the Tristate league wan un usual. The full schedule was played out, not a game being missed, of 'he 21 games played, four were 1 iu ^ games. Sioux City was twice a vie 11m of shutouts, Norfolk taking the Cardinals into camp on both occa sions. The rare tightened considerably. Beatrice dropped two to Sioux Falls and a couple to Grand Island. Nor folk climbed in the standings from 1 bottom to fourth place, taking four straight from Sioux City, who dropped to the bottom, only to climb out Wednesday. The Sioux City team dropped seven straight before it started winning again, when it defeated Hastings Tuesday. Joe McDermott, manager of the Cardinals, is the leading hitter of the league. In 34 games he is hitting for an average of .380. That the pitchers in the league had a good week is no ticeable by the fart that there are only nine men hitting above .300. This reminds one of the old times \yhen a .300 hitter was an exception. Beall of Beatrice is second in the hitting order, with .355, while pez dirtz is third, with .339. Other hit ters follow: McCoy, Beatrice. .328, Fairchild, Sioux City, .327: Snow of Sioux Falls. .323: Kills of Sioux City. 313, Dye of Sioux Falls, .305: Quinn of Grand Island. .305, and Bowman of Grand Island, .299. Sioux City dropped in team hatting from .294 to 381 and lost team fielding leadership to Sioux Falls, which has an average of .963. i Four pitchers have won seven games. They are Shupe of Grand Island. Ulrigg of Sioux Falls, Hilton of Norfolk and Walters of Hastings. The first three have only lost two encounters, while "Iron Man” Wal ters has been defeated four times. Sioux City released '‘Red” Light to Austin, Tex.; purchased Benson of Cedar Rapids and plans to trade or release Leo Fairchild. Zweife! was secured hv Norfolk from Peoria. III., while Grand Island got John Maple, pitcher, from Sioux Falls. Sioux City gets Pitcher Hoetker from the St. Louis Nationals. Talk of a new manager at Sioux City appears un founded and Jo# McDermott will re main at the helm. r*!h#r individual >>att*ng a •rage* 'n •h# league • m follow*.
