BASS BITING WELL AT STATE TAKES Best Catches Beportrd at Night With White Bait. Rains of the laet week or eo have made traveling difficult In th* lake regions of north Nebraska for auto fishermen not familiar with the coun try. The highways, however, all arc In excellent shapa from Norfolk west! and there Is nothing to fear along the prairie trails leading out from thei railroad If the traveler will follow the marked routes, all of which desig nate detours around soft meadows and valleys. The best cslches of big bass now are being made after sundown and as late as 11 p. m. with the whtta ar tificial bait more attractive to the heavyweights than other color* or even live frogs. • Jack West of Woodlake declares that the luminous halts are the best ijust now, while other enthuaiasts In sist that any white bait will do the work while the moon Is out. Daylight fisting also Is good, and no trouble Is experienced In catching the limit, either with plugs or frogs, which are fairly abundant. Some of the largest strings and big gest bass the last week sre reported from Rat and Beaver 'lakes, 40 miles south and west of Woodlake and Johnstown. These lakes are consid ered two of the best bass lakes In Cherry county or any other part of north Nebraska, They in reality are one big lake, as they are connected by a wide and deep channel. Spo'rtsmen visiting Marsh and Dewey lakes recently report the fish pugnacious and from Ilackherry the story Is the same. 3d Prettiest Lake at Omaha’s Door Omaha and Nebraska folks who like to spend their vacations nt fish ing nnd resort lakes are fortunate in having almost nt their doorstep the third most beautiful lake in the world. West Okoboji, in northwest ern Iowa, Is given this distinction by no lees an authority than the [National Geographic society, Lake Geneva, 1n Switzerland, being placed first, and Lake Ixiulse of Canada second. West OkoboJI. with Spirit lake, Lit tle Spirit, Minnekashta, Hottes, Oar, Marble and Hast OkoboJI, offer a won derful summer playground for the MOUNTAIN JOYS AT ESTES PARK That til# Kates park region was early recognized as an outing plaee of more than ordinary pretentions and of unusual rharm Is attested by the fart that the first visitors, who rame in 1865, nt!e on recreation and pleasure bent. Regular transportation from and to Denver was established in 1874. The park was named for .Toe] Estes, who settled In the locality during the early 60s. This section was well and favorably known as Estes park until the found ing of Rocky Mountain National park —so named because It represents the typical scenery of the higher Rocky mountains, including, as it does, some 3H miles of the guardian peaks which here make up the continental divide— the backbone of America — In 1916. Now, the name is perpetuated in the capital of the park, a bustling village which is the gateway to the national park, and the distributing point for mail and supplies for the many hotels and summer residences. Tt U a very substantial little community, fully capable of supplying the need* of the average visitor. Long's peak, tbs captain general of this region, raises its great, square crowned summit to the unusual alti tude of 14.255 feet above the level of the sea. It was so named by mem bers of the Col. H. H. Long ex ploring party, In 1819, previous to which It was designated as "Great Peak" hy Lieutenant Pike, who saw it In 18ft*. Originally reputed to 1-e the seventh most difficult of ascent of all the known rlimhable peaks In this world, the first ascent of record, made hy MaJ. J. TV. Powell and party, In 18*8, was attended with great danger and much hardship. It la not uncommon nowadays, however, with the present trails, especially during the summer season, for visitors to make tha climb, starting from Long's Peak P. O. or inn at Its base or one of the hotels in that vicinity, proceeding on foot all tha way or by horse to tha boulder field, thence on foot. middle west. These lake* are located In the highest part of Iowa, where the atmosphere Is cool and healthful; their crystal clear water* abound In game fish; they have long, Indented shore lines, wher* tent* may be pitched; sandy beaches, hotel*, cot tages, tourist camps and resorts. The Iowa sreat lakes are easily accessible by motor from Omaha and other Nebraska points, over well kepi state highways. m « —A tine modem iotei JSyaint TTnrl ,T#rT roam hats ygittim i am (IN Hnt»i k«i i«k i. v*-^ HOTEL. **ery Pullman car) •* raHlsh your Minaea ta touring headquarters h*ra for mail, telegn ma. laundry, etc. Wiitr *9r booklets; address Dm Saint Paul Hotel: Saint PaaL Minn BIRCH BEACH Hotel and cottages.
