Hummer Is SaTed. Tt was toward night. Farmer Brown's Boy ran through th* cold rain from the barn to the house. As he started to open the door he hap pened to glance to on* side.1 He didn’t open the door. He stopped, stared, rubbed his eyes and stared again. "Well, what do you know about this!" exclaimed Farmer Brown's Boy. "That is a hummingbird sit ting there, or I don't know one when I see it.” Hummer the Humming bird didn't move. He was perched on a nail which had been driven into the house beside the door. He looked ss If he had been stuffed and set up there. Farmer Brown's Boy rouldn't believe that it was a living hird. Very gently he reached out and touehed Hummer. Hummer didn't move. Gently Farmer Brown's Boy closed his hands around Hummer and started to take him from the perr'n. But Hummer clung so tightly to the perch that Farmer Brown's Boy had to loosen those tiny toes one at a time from their grip on the nail. "The poor little fellow must have tried to find shelter here and has died from • the rold," mutttered Farmer Brown's Boy’ sorrowfully. "He got up here too soon, and this sudden cold wave was too much for him. What a pity!” He took Hummer into the house, and then he noticed for the first time that Hummer's tiny eyes still held some brightness. Perhaps he wasn't dead. Farmer Brown's Boy took him over by the Ore and held him where he could feel the warmth. After a while Hummer began to ahow some signs of life. "He isn't dead yet!” erald Farmer Brown's Boy. delightedly. "Perhaps I can save him.” He found a small basket, lined it with some soft cotton, which he first warmed, and put Hummer in it. Hum mer moved a little, but. only a little. He was quite satisfied to nestle down in that warm place. When night came and it. was time to go to hed Farmer Browns Boy covered Ihe bas ket, leaving little airholes, and Ihen hung the basket where it would be warm all night. He was up bright and early next morning and eagerly peeped into the basket. Hummer was moving about. Farmer Brown's Boy took off the cover, and Hummer flew' over to a window. But he was far from strong. "He must be nearly Rtarved,” said Farmer Brown's Boy. ”1 can’t think of anything to feed him but sugar and water. He eats sw et nectar "Tile poor little fellow must have tried to find shelter here and ha* died from rold, ’ muttered Farmer Brown'* Boy sorrow fully. from the flowers, *o perhaps sugar and water will help him out.’ Ho Farmer Brown's Roy made * thin syrup by dissolving sugar In water. Hummer took a little of It. Then he took a little more. Almost at once ha became brighter and live lier. You see. it takes only a little food to give such a tiny bird strength. By the time Farmer Rrowm's Boy had finished his breakfast Hummer was flying about and every moment look ins more himself. The rain waa over, .lolly, bright Mr. Sun was pouring hi* warm sunbeam* into the window. Hummer perched on the edge of n tumbler on the window sill, where be could feel the full warmth of the sun beam*. Then he began to preen his feathers. He seemed not at all afraid. In the middle of the forenoon Farmer Brown's Boy took Hummer otitAirle and let him go. He darted awav as swiftly as If nothing had happened lo him. Htralght to anme early flowers in the garden he flew. Into one after another he ran his long bill. Then, like a little living jewel, lie disappeared over toward Hie Old Orcliaril. Hummer had been so > ed. (f’opj rigid.
