John Redick Sinks Two-Foot Putt on 36th Hole and Grabs State Golf Title V Country Club w Golfer Beats Jack Hughes One Up Two Former Stale Champs Stage I nteresting Match for l‘)2f Honors. '' " iRX, XKR., .1 line 14.—John Rediek, Omaha Country Huh. i« the new state golf cham pion. Jle won a gruelling 36iiole match, one up from John W. Hughes. Omaha Field dub, when llttgliea missed a four foot putt on tlie 36th green this evening. __ They finished tilt- .uni I.v liules all square. Beginning the afternoon 18, Hughes put Rediek four down on the first nine. Neither -iiilfej- was on his game, hut the great light which Rediek waged to come from behind this lead kepi the gallery on tiptoe. ttedick won numbers 29, 30, 31 and 32 to square tlie match again. Hughes looli number 33 when Itedick drove out of bounds, hut Rediek squared it again on ilte 34th with a par four. In liis straight run of four victories was numbered a birdie four on number 29. a 555-yard hole. Hughes had shot a hirdie four on number 26, which is a 525-yard hole. There they were, going into num ber .35. all square. Their drives were alike; their second shots failed to give an advantage and when they got to Z the green they were four alike. Both missed long putts and were down in six. It was still square. It appeared that extra holes would he necessary. Hughes out-drove Red id, on llie 36th hole. This was the only time during tlie day that Hughes had accomplished this feat. Redid, was on the green in two. Hughes' ap proach took a hud kick and rolled upon a raise. He managed to roll it ilown in spile of the lie for a legiti mate putt for a four. Rediek tried In sink his three, hut was two (eet off line. They were three alike and both realized the importance of the next >hol. Hughes was away and shot first. He took off his cap. for the first time during the day, studied the green carefully and shot. The ball .'topped two inches from the pin. Rediek also studied his shot longer than usual. The state title was with in his grasp if he could drop that two t iot putt. He took his stance—tapped i he bail and the ring that thrills the golfer, the noise that a ball makes when it drops into a cup. announced tlie crowning of the 1924 champion. The gallery cheered; Hughes signaled its congratulations to the winner anil i lie Jotti tournament closed.
