With 280 prisoner* now In the coun ty jail, congestion has become a seri ous problem which Sheriff Entires sought to begin solving last week when he called upon the state board of control to ask the legislature to •build an addition to the state peni tentiary. "The men's quarters are especial ly crowded," said Jailer Joe Sherry. "We have room for 180 in the tiers and 10 in the hospital, a total of 190. Vet we have now 263 men in the jail. ‘‘The normal capacity for women is 36 in tiers iid 10 in the hospital and we now have dhly 17 women prisoners.” Lack of ¥oom in the state peni tentiary is largely responsible for the crowding in the Dolglaa county jail, where there are now 56 men under sentence to the penitentiary or re formatory. Some of these have been in the county jail for two years, serv ing sentences for which they should be in the penitentiary, where they would be it there were room. The worst feature of keeping them in the jail is that there is no oppor tunity for them to get outdoor exer cise. And there is no work for them to do. They can only sit and watch the dragging hours.
