Today One Good Reporter. ‘S. 1). Common Sense. The Keeper II as Eaten. Too Tew Own Homes. ^ By ARTHUR BRISBANE J A good reporter must see clearly, Creelman was one. Nelly Bly, Julian Ralph, Stanley of African fame and Lord Macau lay were others. A good veporter fust see clearly, write simply, know men and public affairs, inspire coniidence and know truth from falsehood. ’ Cyrus II. K. Curtis of the Public Ledger and other publications is to be congratulated that he has secured the services of Louis Seibold, one of the ablest of living reporters. South Dakota’s government buys gasoline wholesale, retailing it to the public at 18 cents a gallon, in cluding a 2 cents tax. They call that paternalism and almost an archy in Wall street. New York. But South Dakota calls it common sense. The lighthouse on the little island of Sokotra, in the Indian ocean, was dark and the waters most dan gerous. Cannibals had eaten the lighthouse keepers when supplies failed. They could not supply the light. What happened to that corner of the wcrld would happen to this whole country if anything should (iestrov our public school system, that light of America. ^ President Coolidse tells real es tate men he wants to see this coun try a homo-owning nation. That’s better than Henry Navarre’s wish that every Frenchman should have a chicken cooking on the stove. La Poule Au Poto. Frenchmen, seven millions of them, own the soil of France, thanks to the revolution. That’s what helped them to hold Verdun. The peasants own Sweden. That enabled Charles XII to march with only 12,000 of them through Peter’s great armies. Too few own their homes and the land, in this country. La Follette’s threat of a third party startles all politicians. Demo crats w'ant Senator Wheeler for vice president. His strength would help any ticket. But La Follette probably will be content to frighten the politicians, and not actually run. If he ran, he would elect a democrat, or dem onstrate overwhelming strength in Coolidge. He does not want to do either. Africa is growing cotton success fully and Britain proposes to raise all its cotton “within the em pire.” This need not Worry our south that produces cotton, or the north that gambles in cotton. Better methods, better cotton, labor saving machinery, for picking m and handling, poison gas to discour age the boll-weevil, will protect American cotton growers. Finan>iers in London are wor ried. They planned to keep up the price of rubber, of which they con trol the raw product. But latest news shows that the product is too great to be controlled and the price of rubber is slipping. That will not be bad news in this country, as a cut in the price of rubber is reflected in the cost of tires. How many are interested in that cost. You can judge when you hear that Henry Ford has just fin ished building his car No. 10,000, 000. , It is hard to realize how much going up and down on the earth those 10,000,000 cars have meant. Assuming that they run on the average of 20,000 miles each—and any good automobile properly cared| for should run more miles than that; —the 10,000,000 cars represent in the way to travel 200,000,000,000 miles. How many new ideas, how much fresh air, how much pleasure anil) increased health do you suppose) that mileage represents? If yoil haven’t a car, get one. James Bums, professional bur glar, who has spent 25 years in on)1 prison and has been a burglar for - 51 years, remarks that prisons are * * so well managed that they never weaken a person’s health. That leads the unthinking to say that prison spoils criminals and en courages crime. However, a prison that keeps burglars alive and in good health is better than old-fashioned dun geons in which the prisoners were allowed to starve to death unless friends brought them food, and slept in chains on cold stones. It isn’t what the prison does to the prisoner that is important, but rather the degree of civilization or barbarism that the prison system reveals.
