Interest in New Issues Offsets Bond Reaction [Volume of New Financing. Totaling More Tlian $100, 000.000, Is Absorbed Readily on Market. By Associated Press. New York, dune 1.—Moderate reaction in bond prices last week was counter acted by active bidding for new issues, which totaled more than $100,000,000. Al though the volume of new financing was one nf the heaviest of the year, it was, perhaps, absorbed the most readily. \ The market for new offerings as well o« for listed securities hinged largely on railroad Issues Reports of poor April earnings by most of the carriers induced s altered selling of their Hated nhliga - tions and diverted investment buying from thia channel into the public utility section. Speculative operations were mostly for the decline, ns In the rase of the St. Paul liens, which rear ted to the deficit reported for the month. Keen demand for new high-grade rail road bonds, however, was satisfied par tially by the offering of more than $65.00®, 0(H> of these issues during the week. Th.e three-fold subscription of $20.01)0.000 “Big Four" 5 per cent liens earlier In the week attested to the mar ket's absorptive capacity and a scramble fur $35,000,000 Baltimore A Ohio 6s and about $h.o 00.000 New Orleans. Texas A Mexico r.i^s later indicated that its buy ing power was bv no means exhausted. * 1.10.000,000 N ew Securities. The Baltimore A- Ohio offering marked the road's first step in Its extensive re funding program. To meet 1926 maturi ties. new securities aggregating close to $150,000,000 will be Issued within the next year. Only a Nickel Plate Issue now re main* to complete the important railroad financing operations scheduled and It may appear within a week. Poor distribution of foreign loans re cently floated in this market was em phasize,l lust week by the sharp break In 1 he pew Swiss government f»Vfrs, following dissolution of the offering syndicate. Heavy liquidation brought a dei-llne of 3 points, but good buying support was en countered at this level and the bonds later rallied. Weakness of Mexican government se curities. reflected In lnwer quotations for . ' assented” issues which were dealt in for Ag the first time in months, revived reports r1hat the next interest payment on the debt, tentatively scheduled for duly 1, would be deferred No information whs available from the International commit tee of hankers on Mexico, but there Were Indications the entire service fop 1924 would he discharged in one operation. Trading Interest Ebbs. With the week on the stock exchange cut short by a triple holiday, trading interest was at a lower ebb than usual. T.lberty bonds were firm, with some issues reaching the highest levels of the year in reflection of treasury buying and em ployment of surplus institutional funds. Money rates stiffened temporarily during the week, but weakened ngain at the «los*, when it was reported that funds were being lent on tha "outside ’ market hh low as 2 per cent p'ears for the safety of next interest payments contributed several industrial corporations’ obligations including Wilson A’ Co. nnd Vlrglnia-Farollna issues While po provision for interest on the latter’s bonds has been made, advances will he made on the 7 per cent issue by the bond holders’ committee as security against de posited Hens.
