Wheat Slumps as Speculative Support Fails Rains, Continuing Ovf i Southwest, Temper Dam age Complaints—Market Shows Less Heaviness. I8v CHARLES i. LEYDEN t'niversul Service Staff Correspondent. Chicago, May 2-8.—A Blowing down ol speculative support featured tin* wheat trading today and prices drifted lower consequent ly. Rains over the southwest continued In a scattered wav and temper ed damage complaints. Winnipeg wu> reactionary most of the time and. with exp<i£t Inquiry apparently indifferent, any fresn Incentive to buy was not forthcom ing. Wheat closed % to % cent lower; corn was % tq 1 rent lower; oats were % to H cent off. and rye ruled % to 1 c£nt down. The market showed less heaviness than on the previous day. In fact, at the low point it looked as though the reaction which started yesterday was about over. 1’rotri Inent houses absorbed tnurh of the offerings on the. break, but th>* relative easiness In May wheat, due to larger de liveries tfcan expected and slow export demand, gave the Impression that n re covery might not be expected for the nejrt few days Corn futures cave way. largely because of larger receipt* of cash grain here than looked for. Premiums dropped % to % cent. May corn especially was heavy. The dela^ of planting corn through Indiana and Ohio is freely commented on by reports from the Interior, but they have little influence in the market trend. Oats eased with other grains May oats especially were reactionary. Crop news is generally satisfactory at the moment. Rye dropned tinder scattered commission X house selling with support feeble. Export trade was light. Thj| poor condition of rye crops abroad attracted only temporary buving Provisions eased. Lard and riba were 2% cent lower. Pit Notes. Without doubt the world supply of wheat is ebbing. For the week the vis ible supnlv showed a decrease cloae to 10.000,000 bushels. This Is an enormous amount. The figures seemed to have lit tie Influence on today's market however. * Probably the cables from the other side to the effect that buyers wer** indifferent ?* at the moment whs an offsetting factor. ... But that Europe Is consuming more x\heat Is undeniable. There was a tendency In the trade to await reports from the interior telling how much good the rainfall did the crop. Rains Wf*r« not heavy, and with temper atures higher, the benefit done mav soon he lost sight of. One sure thing. Improve ment to croon has not facilitated selling ahead by farmers, an occurrence that would not be unusual. A belief prevails in some quarters of the grain trade that the acreage reduc tion in the winter and spring wheat belt • this year was greater than the govern ment reports Indicated. A local grain nu-.n has reports which state that the winter crop acreage last fall wrs cut 19 per cant compared with the previous sea son. and this spring acreage was lower .• > 20 per cent comparatively. IjOcrI milling demand for wh«*.at today whs more active, and good sisled sales were effected. Our old crop wheat Is near enough to thp world's competitive basis to attract attention. This fact mav be realized, should foreign demand en liven the last week's capacity. Stocks of wheat remaining at home are dwindling appreciably fast. For four days at Min neapolis stocks were lowered 32F.OOO 11 as he Is. It Is evident that the carryover In this country will differ but slightly ‘ from last year. It Is remarkable that such Is the case when one considers that nur export trade this season has been t- woefully out of line. CHICAGO CASH riUCES. Bv Updike Oriln company, Atlantic Ojjj. Art. I Open.
