Third Party Will ! Carry West, Says Governor Preus Coolidge Campaign Manager. However, Declares Presi dent Sure of 620 Dele gates l»y April 22. Wt t niTPTMf Senire. Washington, April 4 —The word tnat a third party, or Independent political movement, headed by Sen alqr I.a Follette, has captured a largo number of western elates was brought to President Coolidge today by Governor J. A. O. Preus, repub lican, Minnesota. While the statement created a sen sation in both democratic and repub lican quarters, it does not, of course, affect the jn-econvention campaign so far as the president is concerned. Just bofore Governor Preus was received by the president. William M. Butler, campaign manager, made a public statement declaring that Coolidge has 385 delegates now pledged and by April 22 will have a total of 620. Only 535 are needed to nominate. Face Real Menace. But when the smoke of the June conventions has cleared away, both the republican and the democratic candidates will face a real menace. Governor Preus declared. "The third party movement is c.trpng. very strong." he said. "If Senator I.a Follette lives, he will carry Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, Colorado and perhaps Iowa. * He will carry these states against i he combined opposition of the demo crats and the republicans. And the movement is rapidly spreading. May He I p lo Congress. Governor Preus said that the only thing which can^atop the I.a Follette movement is the senator himself. He is now recovering from an attack of pneumonia. A* the situation now stands, it was stated, there is the possibility that neither nominee of the major political parties will secure enough votes to go into the electoral college, and that the entire situation may be thrown itno congress for the selection of a president. Here again the progressive block, It is feared, will be able to force a. deadlock between the demo crats and republicans, as they have in legislative matters so far. Freight Rate Change Urged Certain Section of Country Favored Under Present Schedule, Says Solon. Washington, April 4.—General re vision of freight rates was advocated today before the house commerce committee by Representative Hoch. w republican. Kansas, who declared the present structure is “badly out of 4 adjustment." that certain sections of the country are favored at the ex pense of others, and that certain com modities, particularly farm products, bear an unfair proportion of the freight burden. I'rging favorable action on his bill which would direct the Interstate t ,'ommerce commission to undertake a general readjustment of rates of Mr. Hoch expressed views differing from those of Commissioner Each of the commission who told the commit tee yesterday there was no need for a general rate' revision and that one, it carried out, might disturb business conditions. The Kansas representative, contend ing that the present rate structure which, he said, has grown up piece meal and Is a result of all sorts of local considerations, has failed ade quately to take Into account the In dustrial development of the country westward, said: “This adjustment has been greatly increased by the flat, horizontal pasn ag* Increases in freight rates which have made in recent years. No one contends that these increases have been scientific in any way and the methods can only be justified on the grounds of expediency. Gorman Willing to (Jive Oil Testimony Woman Figuring in Death of Jake Hamon Will “Tell All She Knows” If Called by Senate. Los Angeles. Cal., April 4.—If Mrs. John W. Gorman, better known to the public as Clara Smith llamon, who played an important part in the life and death of the late Jake Ham on, political power and former repub lican national committeeman from Oklahoma. Is called by the senate oil investigating committee, she will tHl "all she knows" concerning the po litical activities of llamon. What she knows, however, she de clined to discuss except to declare It "was not much.” The now Mrs. Gor man is not talking for publication these days. Since her marriage she has been living a quiet life away from public attention, dividing her time be tween her secluded home in Beverly Hills and a ranch near Van Nuys, about 23 miles from Los Angeles. “If I am called by the senate com mittee, I will gladly tell what I know, but that little Is not much," she told International News Service, refusing to elaborate on the statement. "I am so happily married now and am living a very quiet life, trying to forget some of those unpleasant things of the past.” she explained. "That is why I do not care to talk unless it is absolutely necessary.” Mrs. Gorman declined to discuss testimony given by AJ Jennings and others before the senate committee to the effect that llamon had cabinet aspirations and had expended large sum* in connection with the last re publican preeidential nomination. She reiterated that If called by the com mittee "it would be plenty of time to talk.” AGED RAILROAD FLAGMAN DIES William Henry Noel, 73, 2124 Ames avenue, flagman for the Missouri Pa cific railroad, died Thursday at a local hospital. Extension of Three Per Cent Quota ProjK)sed Representative ^ould Have Present Immigration Law in Force t’ntil 1926— I rgcs Inquiry. Washington, April 4—On the eve of house consideration of the John son immigration bill, Representative Sabath, democrat, Illinois, introduced a resolution proposing legislation to extend the present 3 per cent quota law, based on tlie 1910 census, to De cember 31, 1923. and creation of a commission to study the immigration problem. The existing law auto matically expires June 30 next. The commission suggested by Mr. Sabath, who is one of the members of the house immigration committee opposed to the bill sponsored by Chairman Johnson, would be com posed of two senators, two members of the house, and three others to be appointed by the president as repreJ sentatives of industrial, labor and agricultural interests.
