News from the southwest sections, which nad a poor crop a year ago. is flattering. ..‘tuple moisture is assured in the west and south west, where the snow is 20 inches deep over some fields. Primary receipts of wh?at the last week were probably the lightest lu over a year, totaling 2,865.000 bushels, compared w'lth t,726,000 bushels last week and 4.158.O00 bushels a year ago. The domestic demand for wheat has improved but little and as a result the developments in th# mar kets throughout the country have not truly reflected this eha.p reduction in receipt#. The hharp reduction in the acreage to be sown to spring wheat has fallen down as a market influence, although the Sep tember delivery is favored by those buy ers who have the courage to take hold at this time. The damage complaint** sifting in from the soft wheat sections east of the Mississippi are also offset by the favorable conditions In the southwest. CHICAGO CASH PRICES. By Updike Grain Company. March 22.—Stock prices failed to develop a definite trend in to day's brief session of the market, re newal of selling pressure against some of the ateel, rubber and motor shares being counteracted by the strength of a num ber of the representative rails and oils. There w as a fair-sized accumulation of overnight buying orders when the market opened, inanv undoubtedly inspired by President Coolldae s plea to senate lead era for early action on the tax reduction bill. When th^se had been disposed of. operators on the long aide showed no disposition to follow up their advantage and bear tradera renewed their efforts to unsettle industrial Hat. Cross-currents of pricaa continued throughout the dav and establishment of new records of some part of the list being simultaneous with establishing of new high prices in other shares. Kaay money rates which carried over from Friday, apparently had little effect on stock prices. but they resulted in a further strengthening of the bond mark et to which surplus funds are being diverted m large amounts. Mudebaktr wu again the principal tai gel for bear pressure. being ham mered down more than 2 points to 93. a new low for the year. Recessions in the other motors were held to tractions. Re cent pressure against this group has been based on the reported fall-off of sale* . which the automobile manufacturers at tribute to the unseasonable weather in various sections of the country. Belling of the steel shares sent Crucible to a new 1924 low at 65 % and carried United Mates Hteel common down to hut both made moderate recovery from their low prices of the day. Fear of pried cutting n a result of the increas ing competition of mills for business and the lack of aggressive forward buy ing have had a depressing effect on the steel shares. United Mates Rubber, common and first preferred, touched new bottom prices on liquidation inspired by speculative fears for the safety of the preferred dividends. Revival of speculativa Interest in the oil shares waa based on rumors of com petitive buying of mid-continent crude and predictions of another increase in prices. Alar land, Phillips, Pacific and Standard of Canada moved up I to nearly l points. Woolworth established a record high price at 233%. Another brisk advance in Lackawanna, which established a new 1924 high at 124 and closed at 123% dor a net gain of 1%, featured the railroad group. Buy ing of thia issue waa associated with re ports of a possible distribution of the road's Glei Alden Coal company bonds and vagus rumors of Its acquisition of tha Wabash railroad properties. Profit taking in Nouthern Railway apparently having temporarily subsided, the stock moved up to 65%. a record high. A further gain In French franca, which carried them above 6.35 cents, to another new high pries for the year, featured the irregular foreign exchange market. Hter ling was slightly reactionary. Mrength of Brasilian exchange waa due. In pari, to the publication or an optimletlc elate- j inent by the head of the British mieelon which Investigated financial conditions in that country. The weekly clearing house statement showed increases of $*0,746,000 iu loans, discounts and investments; $469,000 in cash In own vaults; $ln.*5«,000 in reserve of member banks In the federal reserve bank; $71,716,000 In net demand deposits and $12,222,000 in time deposits.
