fToday If In \ot I el 'Em Dance'i Politics, McAduo. Devon, Etc. Discovering the I itainin. Three Kinds of If calth. ^By ARTHUR BRISBANE^ Dr. Guthrie, rector of St. Mark fine Episcopal church in New 1 ork, believes in dancing as part of re ligious service. Bishop Manning, his superior, forbids dancing in the church service. Nevertheless, Dr. Guthrie will have the dancing. A mere layman is bound to as sume that the bishop knows best. The student observes with inter est that Dr. Guthrie has on his side such scientists as Spencer, Darwin, Haeckel, and Huxley. All of them agree that dancing and religion were closely united in the begin ning. All savages express religious emotion in dancing —some of it violent. Even animals, in the jungle, and the captive baboon in his cage, express their emotions in » sort of dance. The Bible tells us that David danced before the ark, evidently convinced that he was pleasing the ruler <rf heaven. You have noticed that little chil dren dance comically when they are angry or pleased. The fact is that our bodies and muscles are well developed, our minds poorly developed. So. in joy or rage, war or religion, when in articulate thought fails us, wo are very apt to “say it with dancing.” How would it be, since human beings are different, and their con ceptions, of what pleases divine power even more different, to let those dance that want to. those pray that want to pray, and those sing that want to sing. Omnis cience above knows what they all mean and can sort out the good in tentions. Mr. McAdoo leads Underwood in the Georgia primary at least 5 to 1 a landslide. One thing may be said positively: Mr. McAdoo still holds all of his influence with organized labor, and ' especially with railroad men. They don't care anything about Doheny and the Teapot Dome. They are for McAdoo. And if he should be nominated there would be many a vote, ordinarily repub lican, cast for him. Newspapers talk of W. J. Bryan rs a democratic candidate. Mr. Bryan isn't taking the talk too seriously. He would run if nomi nated: so would anybody else. But he tells you quite frankly that he knows how many enemies he has made in many conventions and how many powerful men there are that would prefer any other candidate. Mr. Bryan, however, expects to be a fighting unit in the democratic convention, and he ought to be there. Florida should be proud to send a man admired for his honesty and ability all over this country, by those that agree and those that do not agree with his views. The moat mysterious and im portant thing in human health and diet is the vitamin. When it is lack ing you die, no matter how much “food” you may eat. Feed a rat on lard which con tains no vitamins and the rat dies of starvation. Feed another rat on butter, containing many vitamins, it lives, gets fat and multiplies. Many kinds of vitamins are known to science, producing differ ent, necessary effects, but until now, all that science knew of the vitamins was that they existed and were necessary. Now Dr. Walter H. Eddy of Co lumbia university, after years of patient work with his associates has “isolated” and identified the vitamin. “It is an organic chemical structure,” says the learned man. "Composed of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. ' Scientists hope they will be able to manufacture vitamin. If so. hu man beings in their food, their shape, and their needs may change enormously in a few years. Ex perience teaches, however, that no change of any importance comes very suddenly in this world. It ap reams to be mapped out in advance rnd comes about gradually. Thorp are three kinds of wealth only—the earth, on which you stand, time, and man's intelligence. How wealth increases and time is partially increased or saved is shown by research of the National Association of Farm Equipment Manufacturers. Thanks to ma chinery saving labor, American farmers saved last year 1,382,539, 204 days of actual -work. Figured at $3 a day that would be a gain to the farmers of $4,000, 000,000. Farmers will wonder where the mcney i*. The fact, unfortunately, is that the saving of time, money and cost due to perf ding of machinery, goes largely to middlemen not much of it to those that do the actual work. Now that the bonus hill seems sure to go through the se nate and receive President Coolidge's signa ture, big gentlemen whose hearts ache when they think of taxes, be gin to seek comfort. Here is some from an able man. The paying of $2,009,000,000 to roldiers now, a miserably small sum for what they sacrificed and die), will save taxpayers many billions in years to come. Men will take now what they get, in lieu of other claims against the government. If these claims hadn't been satisfied now, for a small sum, that would have meant a gigantic new pension roll later, with millions of men and widows on the pension roll. The government is getting a great bargain, soldiers are getting very little, and taxpayers, if they only knew it, are saving money. (Copyright. lf"4 ) Jewish Membership Drive.
