Chiiago, March 21 Wheat drifted aim lessly in lower ground fhe gr«.iter part of today, regaining mu< h of Ha loss as short covering set in. The undertone was in clined toward firmness, but apex u la live In terest failed to become hcoum**<1. Weak n»*aa at Liverpool led to the early deyiine. while reports of hessian fly Infestation over the southwest wheat belt augmented the covering movement near the Im ii. W heat closed unchanged to Sc low-r. corn was steady to **<• down. oat.- wete unchanged to '% r down and r^e ri.ied steady to V*c higher. Outside market*, even Winnipeg. dis played little initiative and followed closely the local trend. The markets showed plain evidence of being in a rut’* and the swings, although narrow, were guided more by technical conditions than anything else Export interest was r'.r»e. iWal sales being ley* than 200.000 hush r In. Trade In corn was largely lo'al all day Firmness in the cash mart attract* 1 fair buying early, hut it did not '*st. The movement of this grain to primary p .ints continued light, local insp* t on being for only 92 cars, and there was lit*f** null «* Hon for any betterment hi the Min • try roads are still in Impa^aN* shape Oats r nhibited r firm under'one. hut foiled to make any head**. and fu*?h»d slightly lower with the rest. five was relatively firm and ch red higher. There was a fijr amount of buying in this grain during the first hour, which was regarded .is 1 he removal of hedger. Provisions closed slightly ease. I.ard was unchanged to 5c lower and ribs were unchanged. Pit Notes. Accepted authorities advised that, seri ous damage to wheat in the Ohio viH«r is claimed a* a result of freezing and thawing weather. In the southwest the general condition of the anil la termed excellent. The trade at this time Is in clined to wait actual developments, how ever, when growing weather materializes. Milling trade locally w«s more active and cash markets throughout the country told of firmer premiums. The receipts fell below last year's run. while stocks in the northwest continued to ebb. the de cnnsH at Minneapolis for the week being 300,000 bushels. Reports from the Canadian market say that wheat is ready to move down the lakes >n volume at the opening of navigs Mon. This did not mown, however, IhHt the wheat has been sold to Kur«d'e. only that shippers are desirous of getting their supplies at a v« liable positions. There was some solace to be taken in the fHft that receipts of 1’nited States wheat at the sea ports today were in excess of th< bonded grain. Clearances* of wheat from North Amer ica and the Argentina last week showed considerable increase World shipments this week are estimated jn excess of 17. 000,000 bushels. Despite the larger ship nicnis from the aouihern hemisphere the visible supply In that country is oxer I*i,ft00.flft0 bvshelr, which Is estimated as the largest ever known there at this season of the year.
