Mon asteries and nunneries are being recon structed for use as prisons. Peniten tiaries throughout Germany are over crowded. Hundreds of convicts have to wait for weeks and months to serve their terms. That is partly due io the post-war crime wave flooding central Europe, and partly to the fact that several big prisons have been seized by the French In the oc cupied territories. At present there are about 66,000 convicts confined in Prussian prisons ns against tho average pre-war rate of 60,000. Though about 120 prisons are available in Prussia, former work ing houses and public buildings have to be rebuilt in order to be used for penitentiaries. The result of this calamity is that courts resort to fines instead of pris on terms in minor cases. Hundreds of convicts sentenced to short terms are granted a virtually indefinite re prieve. As a result criminality Is in creasing at an alarming rate. - _ ——■ ____ ANNOUNCEMENTS^^ funeral Notices. A ANDERSON—Mra. Mary, beloved wlfa of Finley M.
