Educators Urge Closer Studies in Citizenship Declare Destiny of the Public Sehools Is Destiny of Nation ■—Ask for Place in Cabinet. Chicago, Eeb. 28.—Declaring that ' the destiny of the public schools is the destiny of the republic,” the de partment of superintendence of the National Educational association adopted resolutions at the cloeing session of its convention today, call ing for a broadening program of edu cation to be offered the American boy and girl. Increased educational costs must be expected by the American public if proper training is to be given the youth of the land, the resolutions state. They outline at the same time the department’s endorsement of American education week, its support for a plan to make the school system of Washington a model for the nation, its backing of the Sterling-Reed bill pending In congress providing for a cabinet department of education, Its support of plans to better rural edu cation, to avoid war through edu cation of youth, and to bring law ob servance through education. "The nation of the future must pass through the school room, wherd the traditions of our free Institutions are conserved and transmitted. What (hat future shall be rests with the American people,” the resolution says. The appointment of a committee to devise ways to solve the problem of rural education, to give the country youth the same educational advan tages as the city youth, was endorsed. Expressing the opinion that “our civilization is in danger of being un dermined by failure to observe the laws of our country,” the superin tendents urged that the echoola of America stress the fundamental prin ciples of American citizenship; par ticipation in governmental activities and complete loyalty and obedience to Ha laws.” Tubercular Testing Work to Start in Douglas March 3 Tubercular testing work under the new state regulations will begin in Douglas county March 3. Eight state and federal veterinarians will be In the field and will start work In Val ley and Waterloo precincts on the above date. It is expected that Doug las county will be covered in approx imately a month’s time. Every cattle owner of the county will be given the opportunity to have his cows tested by the state and fed eral men. The work will be carried on under ’he supervision of Dr. H. T. D. I .ackle of the federal department and Dr. C. F. Edwards of the state bu reau of animal Industry. Vfayor of Ovina Becomes Citizen at Kansas City Kansas City, Feb. 28.—S. A. Funeral services for Gertrude Dall ing, 1-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Dailing, 1608 Martha street, who died Wednesday of pneu monia, were held Thursday afternoon at 2 at the residence. Omaha Orchestra to Play for Brunswick Frank TV. Hodek, jr., and h!s or chestra are soon to play for Bruns wick records, It was learned last| night. The orchestra is being advertised throughout the state and Hodek said last night that if the campaign was successful his orchestra might make its first records within a few months. The orchestra, organized eight months ago by Mr. Hodek, has been playing at the Roseland Garden. Quality of music was discovered by u scout of the Brunswick people, it Is said, and the plans for the acquire ment of the orchestra hate been dis cussed for over a month. Latitude in Call for County Meet Republican Committees May Issue Calls on Whatever Basis They Choose, Lincoln, Feb. '’8.—County chairmen ot the republican party today were advised by Dr. T. W. Bass, secretary of the state committee, that county organizations may issue the call for the. county convention "on whatever basis they choose.” The instructions Issued follow: "In a recent opinion handed this office by the ottorney general, Q. S. Spillman, he has ruled that delegates to the county convention must be elected at the primary election. April 8. The time for filing closes March 8.
