Any radio broadcasting station may lie "tuned in on" any time regard less of the proximity of any other station and several stations near a receiving set may be all -tuned out and a station thousands of miles sway tuned iq, aocordlng to F— F. Sengstock, Chicago, who addressed tTie Western Electrical Inspectors’ association at Hotel Fontenelle to day. ‘‘I once purchased a radio set for a friend," lie said. "The friend lived within three Jjlocks of the most pow erful station in Chicago and, had strung his aerial parallel with that of the station. But that made no difference, and when he wished to hear I.os Angeles lie experienced no difficulty in tuning through every station in Chicago. "There are certain types of sets, of course, that will not tune through these close and powerful waves. But I feel safe in saying that any re ceiving set, w’ith few exceptions, equipped with a wave trap will expe rience no difficulty in reaching any where." Sengstock also told of a new type of radio to be placed on the market in February by the Radio Corpora tion of America. This set is port able and compact and works with out either a ground wire or an aerial. It is also capable of reaching from coast-to coast. „ No definite announcement has been made about the Instrument, he said, other than that it will be out next month. A Queer World Ah Tak, Accused of At tempt to Smuggle 48 Mahjong Sets IntoU.S-, Says They Were for Bad Luck at Sea. Sew York, Jan. :?0.—Ah Tak, Chi nese steward on the liner Kmpress of Canada, paid a tine of $100 tix cus tom authorities today for an alleged attempt to smuggle 4$ malt jong sets into the I'nited States. Ah Tak explained that tile Chinese seamen were superstitutious. When one lost heavily at the game lie threw the offending set into tlie sea. There fore, lie added, it was necessary tt carry from 50 to 100 sets aboard. Nothing to LiveTor. St. Louis, Jan. 31.—Jakey, a goose, who took his whisky straight and washed it down with 4 swig of beer in preprohibition days, is dead. He was 18 years old and was owned by John Keller, former saloon pro prietor. In the old days a round of drinks wasn’t complete unless Jakey was in on the set up. When Jakey had enough he would go to the shed and sleep it off. Thousands of visitors to St. Louis, it is said, have gone to St. Louis just to buy Jakey a drink. Spurn Court Dress. London. Jan. 31.—British tailors, anxious to supply the new cabinet ministers with court dress for offi cial functions, are bombarding mem bers of the government with circu lars advertising their wares. Most of these missives have found an un honored grave hi the wastebasket, and as the lowest figure quoted for II conventional court suit with knee breeches and silk stockings is £150 ir is not expected the tailors will reap a big harvest. An unnamed minister asserted in nn interview that some of his roi li-agues were buying court attire, but that the others would not waste their money. It was true that a suit rould he hired for £5, but the minister did not fancy borrowed clothing. BRIEF CITY NEWS |j Frank Gaines to Speak—Frank H.
