By Anaoetoted Prp*w. Iais Angeles, Jan. 14.—Investiga tion of the ahootlng here New Year's night of Courtland S. Pines, Den ver oil man, by Horace S. Greer, chauffeur to the screen shtv, Mabel Xormand; stood still today while au thorities waited for the complete re covery of Dines from a bullet wound in the lung, pending resumption Jan uary 30 of Greer's preliminary hear ing on a charge of assault with in tent to kill. Testimony given by the wounded man from ills bed in the Good Samar atin hospital last Monday displayed, according to prosecution attorneys, suoh startling variance from other witnesses’ reports of what he had said shortly after the shooting that Justice J. Walter Hanby yesterday ordered Dines to post J5.000 bond to guarantee Ids appearance in court as a material witness and then con tinued the preliminary hearing until January 30 to permit the oil man to regain strength sufficient to carry him through a grilling cross-examina tion in court. Justice Hanby's action was taken at the request of the-district attor ney's office, v hich pointed out that Dines' testimony that he could not say of his own knowledge that Greer shot him was in glaring contradic tion to his positive statements to po lice on the night of the shooting and indicated that the Denver man -night leave the jurisdiction of the court rather than testify again unless placed under bond to appear. Yesterday's session of the hearing was held at the bedside of Mrs. Edith Burns, former companion «f Miss Xormand, Illness preventing her ap pearance at the courthouse. Her tes timony developed little that was new. She Identified the pistol used by Greer as the property of Miss Nor-j manil and told how the rcreen actress, as she was leaving for Dines’ apartment New Year’s day, asked her to call on the telephone in an hour and provide her with an excuse to leave the party, as she wanted to be home early. $35 AN ACRE FOR WATER URGED Salt Lake City, Jan. 2-i.—That the settlers on the North Platte (Nebras ka-Wyoming) reclamation project pay only $35 per acre for the water on their land was one of the recommen dations made yesterday to the federal tact finding commission by F. S. McAffee, J. T. Mitchell and William Morrow, representatives of the Water Users' association of the North Platte district. The testimony of the delegates from this project will he completed today. The witnesses yesterday stated that It was only with the definite under standing that the water, under nn condition was to cost more than $35 per acre, that the aettlers signed the contract with the reclamation service. William Morrow, an attorney from Scottsbluff, also stated that a mis representation had occurred at the time of signing the contract, lie said that the water users had voted upon a printed ballot prepared by the rec lamation service, delineating the du ties of the settler. This ballot, ac cording to Morrow, did not touch upon the maintenance and operating costs. But when the contract was presented to the president of the as sociation to sign, Morrow added, a definite clause outlining the duties of the settler in regard to this matter was included. Why the discrepancy was not noticed at the time he does not know, he told the commission. WHEAT SAID ONLY LOSER OF CROPS Denver, Colo., Jan. 24.—A statement 1 that “there Ih po agricultural depres sion at present excepting us to wheat," was made today hy Charles Dillon, assistant to the chairman of the western railway presidents' committee on public relations, before the Colo rado Stock Growers’ association. “A good many cattlemen over borrowed during the war and have not yet gotten out from under the load, wlulo many others have been sending to market a quality of stock for which demand is larking and prices low,” he said. “For the purely farming side, how ever, it should he remembered that 27 principal crops or produced—cal lie included—gained from ,'i to (17 per cent In prlre last year. Only four declined, rye, 42 per cent; wheat, 17 per cent; rice, S per cent, and hogs 4 per cent. Compared with 1021, the value of farm products has risen IS per cent.” lie said that, it was idle to blame railroads for agriculture's past troubles. LINCOLN MAKES NEW CONFESSION Aurora, III..
