Buy a Car and Home Now for the Price of a Home in the Spring 'CATTLE SALES BY MAIL ARE URGED Livestock Men Told Their Greatest Problem Is Dis tribution of Product. X mail order business between the cattle breeder of the west and the cattle feeder of the "corn belt” was suggested by Charles A. Myers, Knight. VVyo., In an address to the Nutional Livestock association, In in the convention at Hotel Fontenelle today. "We, as breeders, spend four years producing an animal and then turn over our product to a brokers’ mar ket and take a gambler’s chance for a profit,” he said. "We take a chance on a market that Is continually af fected with St. Vitus' dance. “if we can standardize our herds and guarantee to the feeder a stand ard steer of his choice we can begin doing business by mail. The feeder can order so many cattle from us at a certain price and we can deliver them. He in turn will be able to put them on the market at opportune times and sell them at a profit.” The mall order Idea Introduced Into the cattle business wrould help bring about an orderly system of market ing, he said. “The greatest problem Is not pro duction but distribution. A business man looks to his market, we should do the same thing. "Many customs of the stock busi ness passed with the open range. We raisers are not raisers and finishers. We simply breed the stock and turn It over to the corn belt for finishing. There are no feeders today; these men have become finishers.” This was the second day of the an nual convention. The morning was devoted to discussion of problems con fronting the members of the associa tion, Senator J. B. Kendrtk of Wyom ing was scheduled to address the gathering during the afternoon, as was W. B. Greeley, forester. Greeley will speak on “Grazing Fees on Na tional Forests.” Neu) York — Day by Day— By o. o. McIntyre. New York, Jan. 16.—Hlghbrowism !p aw'e-inspirlng only at a distance. The most erudite gentleman of my icquaintance is an archaeologist and nthropologist. He drips learning. Is volumes are beyond understand ng of the average man. Yet in penny-ante poker gAmes he s the life of the party. He would rather gallop the dominoes than, well, perhaps trace the descent of man. He says “ain’t” <and “knowed” and ■ther strange locutions just, I lmag ue. to-cover up his vast acquisition f knowledge. 0 Thpre is an old proverb running: .V learned man can only be appre uted by another learned man.” Still his man is a favorite among the uieducated. He goes hunting with i former ball player who cannot i cad or write and he is a patron of burlesque and huma "sweet mama” songs. Some months ago I spent an even ing with a curator of the department of vertebrate palaeontology, yet the evening's discussion centered about Kuth's ability to smack the apple over the garden wall. The most professional man I ever saw and one who used the biggest and most gorgeous words was asso ciate editor of a ilppy story maga zine. He was in a perpetual sweat about the abstruse problems of life and I don’t see how he ever put his mind to fiction villains and tempt i essea. There are times I think when all of us want to appear a little more learned than we really are. So the highbrow In oblique fashion wants to wear a coating of Ignorance. Tn a Jesting manner a New York writer once had printed a little brochure that teemed with apparently weighty knowledge. It ran smoothly enough, yet, as a matter of fact. It had no meaning at all. It was Just words. He sent it to friends and re ceived hundreds of replies telling him how much they enjoyed it. Dusky Florence Mills, the sepia comedienne, who created a furore In s "hlgh yaller’’ revue Is to have her wn supper .club In the sacred pre cincts of Park avenue. The decora tions of her club are the finest that ever brought a ring-side table gath ering galloping to pay a $ 10 cover charge. Just 15 minutes by motor from Broadway and Forty-second street Is a gypsy camp. There are more than ■ “00 subjects of Romany there, living In covered wagons. Even on cold I nights they sit about the open camp fire and each Saturday night there I is a dance. It Is almost a perma nent camp now for the gypsies have been there nearly two years. The women go forth of mornings to the various sections of New York and suburbs to tell fortunes and the men sell plaster statues. There Is a king and queen, venerable patriarchs who do nothing apparently save sit about and smoke Turkish pipes. New York children are not fearful of the gypsy bugaboo. When gypsies used to come (o small towns, the fear of being kidnaped was In every cblldlsh heart. In the New York gypsy camp the children play with the gypsy children. In a handsome man newspaper contest the prize winner proved to he a waiter In a ham and eggery near Grand Central. The reward was to be a part In a moving picture comedy. The waiter declined the position. Despite the fact that he was brought up In a restaurant he had no desire to hurl the custard pie. Incidentally, when the waiter was Interviewed he was asked what happened when he received news of ^hls victory. “My wife laughed," he ^sald simply. Copyright. 10 2 4.
