A Nebraskan in Washington | By P. C. POWELX. W—h Inst Oil C ormpondant Tbs Onib* Bae. A cat which hu been held In the Tammany hall bag for some time le finally out lines the speech In the senate by Senator Royal S. Copeland of New York, In which he favored the bonus and lower taxes. It Is taken nowth at among other health propo sitions propounded by the New York physician Is one to the effect that Royal S. Copeland of New York Is the best political tonic In the world for the United Staten In other words, another compro mise, dark horse candidate tn the democratic ranks Is out In the open These scheduled addresses in the senate usually find nearly all sena tors and members of the press tn the smoking room and the Copeland address was not unusual In this re spect. However, on the day of the Lodge Rorah debate on recognition of soviet Russia there were few vacant seats. Lodge as an orator Is a failure, but when it comes to facts and figures and that something which calls for rapt attention, he Is there plus. Borah, on the other hand. Is a ftno talker, but devoid of many telling facts and figures. Maj. H. H. Antles, former state sec retary of public welfare, is in Wash ington this week on strictly private business. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Rosen thal of Omaha were callers at the office of Senator R. B. Howell this week. A recent supreme court decision to the effort that the lack of earnings of a poor railroad may be deducted from the earnings of a good railroad in figuring tho returns necessary for a consolidated railroad line is looked upon by Edgar Howard as a pre liminary step of the railroads to make the consolidation business a mighty good paying proposition. One wag from Nebraska has de scribed Senator Brookhart of Iowa as the “Alfalfa John of the United States senate." This is due to the fact that the Iowa senator tqlks on nearly every subject which comes up for debate in the senate. To date, Senator R. B. Howell of Nebraska, has nevir uttered a word on the floor of the senate except Couzens when his name is called to vote on the Interstate commerce com mittee ehalrmnn. His desk continues to be a mass of figures and Its dollars to doughnuts he's preparing for some thing when the opportunity arises. The Nebraskan's guess is It is the railroad yuestion, because Howell, like a majority of middle western senators, believes the ratlroad ques tion is more momentous In the mid dle west and Its prosperity than the proposed tax reduction. Among other things Trenmore Cone, on a visit to Washington, de sires Is that Senator Georg'- W. Nor •ls file for the nomination for United ’.rates senator on the republican ticket and that the senator win In the primary. “They are all afraid of him, let me have him," came from Trenmore In a fierce, raw meat diet voice. My, how these senators, who. In speaking of each other say the "dle tingulshed” or "honorable senator from ao-in-so’’ trust each other? One day this week Senator Norris and a number of the Insurgent senators re ceived an invitation to luncheon at 1 in the afternoon. Now the senate al ways starts business at 12,-,noon, continuing until well into the after noon. “We’ll go,” said Norris on the floor of the senate, “If we are as sured no vote will las taken on the chairmanship of the interstate com merce committee.” After these assurance had been re ceived from the regular republican and the democrats, the luncheon guests filed out of the senate cham ber.
