BURGESS BEDTIME STORIES -- THORNTON \V. BIRGKSS. - A New Year in the Sunny South. Safe in their nest in the little cup ^ktard in the treat man-bird, as they railed the airplane, Danny and Nanny Meadow Mouse talked and talked and talked. The airplane was locked up in the shed for the night and there was nothing to disturb them. Danny told nil about his adventures and the strange people be had inrt. He told about Gutor the Alligator and Grand pa Pelican and Darter tho Snakeblrd and Kgret, the snowy cousin of I.oBg l»‘S«s the Heron. Nanny told how noth ing h«4 happened there until that very afternoon. Then the great nun bird hod l*en rolled out of its shed and the dreadful rtotse hod begun. Of course, Nanny meant the engine had been started. "I was frightened almost to death, Hanny Meadow Mouse,” said she, snuggling a little closer to him. ‘ You see, ( thought that great nun-bird W going to fly and take me away where I never, never wolild have u chance to see you again. I was afraid to go a ltd T was afraid to stay. But here we are together, and you roust promise never to leave me again. Hay that you never, never will, Danny." "I never, never, never will, ff I van help it." said Danny. And with this promise Nanny had to la* content. "Now, while they had been talking in the night a strange and wonderful thing had happened. An old year had passed out and a new year had come In. Danny and Nanny didn't know it, liut it was so. Bo it happened that when morning camo the great man bird was once more rolled out of Its shed. The engine was started. The av iator climbed Into ills M-at, and pr<» < ntly they were all up in the air Tou see. that aviator was going to give an exhibition In order to celebrate the New Year. That was the strangest. New Year Danny and Nanny ever had known. The sun was bright, the air "as warm, Mr. Mocker was singing, there were flowers in bloom, and if they hadn't known that it couldn't be they would have thought that It was mid summer. In faet, their reals were ton wsrm. They actually wore uncomfort able. Th6 great man-bird kept going up and coming down. Sometimes the av iator took some ono up with him Sometimes he went up (done and made the great Ilian bird swoop and dive and turn over and do ju-t urh wonderful things in tin air ns the best fliers among the birds, do, and Danny told all about Iris adventures and the strange people he had met. some thing* that even they cannot do. And all the time Danny and Nan ny Meadow Mouse wire in the big man-bird. They were actually enjoy ing it. You see, they bad been flying so much that they no longer were afraid. Besides, the big man-bird "as now their home and the aviator was their friend. So in this strange way they spent New Year's Day, and it was a happy day. It was quite as happy a New Year as ever they had spent at home when the Green Meadows were cov ered with snow and lee. Being togeth er again, they were so happy that right down In their hearts they wished everybody else happiness, which was jui|t the right wish for New Year's Day. They made that wish with all their might. And H must have come true, for every one else seemed to be happy So Danny and Nanny Meadow Mouse began the New Year way, way down In the Sunny S< uth, and didn't know- that up in the N rth they had come from all their friends still there were sure that they were dead and thought of th- m a little bit sorrowful ly on this happy New Year Day.
