BURGESS BEDTIME STORIES - Hv THORNTON W. BURGESS. - Darter the Snakeblrd. "It Isn't a snake at all! It Isn't a snake at all! It Is a bird and not a snake!" Danny Meadow Mouse kept saying over and over to himself as he watched a snake-like head and neck moving through the water. Gradually the body of the stranger appeared above the water once more. Then a pair of big wings were lifted, and this big, strange bird flewf back up in the tree where Danny had first seen him. Such a relief as it was to Danny' to know that this stranger wasn’t a snake after all. Danny got | a good look at him now, for he was sitting on a deud branch. He had quite a long tail and webbed feet. Hr was a big bird, about two-thirds a; big as Grandpa Pelican. "He would be good looking if II were not for that snake-like neflk,” thought Danny. "N'o one that maker me think of a snake can ever be good look.ng in my eyes. I wonder who he is? I think I'll go over and asl, Grandpa Pelican 1 So Danny quietly went over as near to the stump on which sat Grandpa Pelican as he could get. "If you please. Grandpa Pelican," said Danny most politely, "tell me who that queer fellow with a neck.like a snake Is.’ * Grandpa Pelican looked down at Danny with a twinkle in his eyes. “Do you mean the one' sitting over on that dead branch?" he asked. Danny nodded. “That is the one. said he. |“lk Rives me the shivers THE NEBBS_ ' THE ANNUAL ARGUMENT. Directed for The Omaha Bee by Sol He.. fauDV. "Some folks call him Water Tur key, but I don't see any sense to that at all. Have you noticed that bill of his?" "yes," replied Danny. "It looks dan gerous. I wouldn't want to be struck with it.” "No. I don't think you would," re plied Grandpa Pelican, his eyes twin kling again. "He could drive it right through you.” Danny shivered at the very thought. "Would he do that?” he asked. "Does he eat little people like me?” "Bless you. no,” replied Grandpa Palican. "Darter is a fisherman the Danny got a good look at him now, for he was sitting on a dead branch same as I am. He is a mighty good fisherman, too. He spears his fish." "What do you mean by that?" ask ed Danny, who of course know noth ing about fishing. " I mean that he runs that sharp bill of his right through a fish." re plied Grandpa Pelican. "Do—do you fish that way?" Danny asked. Grandpa Pelican chuckled. "Does this bill of mine look as if it could be driven through anything?” he asked. Danny had to confess that It didn't. And he felt a little foolish for having asked such a question. "If you wait awhile you will have a chance to see Darter fishing. It really is worth seeing," continued Grandpa Pelipan. Having nothing else to do. Danny decided to wait. (Copyright, III}.)
