Xmas Gift Suggestions Will Help You Decide on Last Minute Gifts ^Nebraska Spuds i Are Best for Seed Potato Test Plot Near Cozad Shows Loss of $2,200 l»y Use of Northern Seed. I'ozad, Neb., Dec. 23.—The use of western certified potatoes for seed last year would have made $2,200 more net profit on 20 acres for Carl Winters, near here, according to County Extension Agent Hwht, who had Mr. Winters conduct a detnon si ration test between certified western Nebraska seed and his own seed, which he had grown from northern stock imported the previous year. The potatoes from his own seed made but 40 bushels to tho acre, while those from the western certified seed made 126 bushels. Figuring this difference at $1.25 per bushel, the price received by Mr. Winters for his marketable potatoes this year, makes the total of $2,200. Mr. Winters used the Koehnke cer tified Early Ohios in the demonstra tion. Similar tests have been run, as projects of the agricuitural exten sion service, by other county exten sion agents in many other counties of the state to compare the yields from western Nebraska seed With home grown and northern grown and im ported seed stock. This Dawson county demonstration is tho most out standing result favoring the Nebraska seed yet received this year by the agricultural college at Lincoln. Four demonstration tests in Daw son county last year averaged 322 bushels for the western certified seed and 200 bushels for the home grown sea^1, the records in the county farm (bureau office show. Many farmers of the county used the Nebraska cer tified seed this year as a result. Mr. Winters wishes now that he had been one of them. He will use Koehnke certified seed next year. The supply of western Nebraska fcertifled send stock of the Early Ohio Variety will not be plentiful next hpring, according to Prof. H. O. Wer ner, secretary of the Nebraska Potato Improvement association, who has been in immediate contact with all the certification that has been done In Western Nebraska thie season.
