Dr. Leighton Darks of St. Bartholo mews church. New York, was brand ed Monday night as a "limelight lov er," a “bishop hater" and a “heresy trial-hunting hero" by Bishop Ernest Vincent Shayier of the Omaha Pro testant Episcopal diocese, in connec tion with his rejection of tjje recent pastoral letter i f the house of bishops at Dalia.*, Tex. "We must make allowances for the brainstorms of mistaken men, foi the limelight lovers, bishop haters and heresy tiiai hunting heroes," the bishop said. “I voted ex animo for the pastoral letter because I firmly believe in the virgin birth of our Lord Christ Jesus and in His resurrection from the dead. Otherw.se Christmas would be no more than Lincoln's birthday, and all Christians would be worshipping a dead man today. “There is room for difference in Individual interpretation of facts of truth, but there is no room for denial of these fact*. "Loyalty was expressed and pledged by these men when a commission to teach and preach was given them in exchange. Common honesty demands the return of the commission when the pledge of loyalty is revoked. "What would you do with a com missioned officer in the United States army who afterwards interpreted the Americanism of the constitution as bolshevism? L. A. Waxes Hot Settlement l»y Committee Fails With Charge Body Stacked With Puritans. By kiiuirlHlfd I’m*. Los Angeles. Lee. Ik.—Settlement ot the "blue law1' controversy here be* tween civic organization* and the city council seemed even more remote to day following a stormy meeting la*t night of a mixed committee repre senting both sides, which disbanded noisily after charges wire hurled that the body was “stacked'' with 'puri tanical" partisans. The committee met In the city hall to discuss revision of an ordinance prohibiting public dancing after mid night. Stein- . nt enforcement of this measure at the motion picture direct ors' ball Thanksgiving eve precipi tated the fight now being waged. Refusal of the Chamber of Com merce and the Merchants' and Manu facturers' association to participate in the committee's work in the ground that its membership was not repre sentative of the city as a whole was followed by other eh rpes that th* committee was “stacked" against re vision. One of the committee mem bers, repro-i nting the <• ty council, ii was pointed out, already hud express ed himself rs fa\ ring a more drastic dance ordinance which would advance th<- “dance dead line" from midnight to 11 o'clock. An abrupt adjournment was accom panied by predictions by "anti-blue'' adherents that the controversy would be passed along to the people for a solution at a «pr' al election. •At the same hour, in another room of the city hall; an ordinance provid ing a fine of 150 for any person con victed of producing a risque or im moral play was amended to increase the penalty to 1500 and six months in Jaii. Another development was an an noun- --merit by Albert W. Shaw, man ager of the Jinnistan Grotto's re- itljr raided charity circus, that the grotto's inr "I ball th * year would be held in Venice, Cal., instead of in Los Angeif!-. to avoid further financial loss on aciount of ministerial iaQpr ference.” To clean silver purses, cover with buttermilk and let stand all night.
