- - - - - - - - - M31ue Lou Says Bu dget No Help Trouble Is Her Running Mate —Discouraged; Says She Can’t Catch Up—De nial Will Help. * By MARTHA ALLEN. 4 4-¥“\ UDGETS are fine things for l"N working girls hut they mean nothing to me," writes Lou. "They never seem to provide for n long sickness and lay-off," she adds. Anyone who can follow a budget through a whole year is fortunate, we ll admit, especially when there iR no additional sum for extra expense. If there ia going to be a budget there has to be an extra amount in the bank. In this budget there hasn’t in all probability been any large amount of money set aside for the unexpected things that beset us. The finest little budget that was ever seen with all the.pretty columns and spaces—so much for clothes, so much for food, amusements and charity, etc., won’t help then. And things begin to happen. A dentist bill can eat up the vacation money and then funds used for that necessary vacation were probably taken from the Christmas money roll. Girls like Lou sometimes let financial troubles pile up upon them until they seem colossal. Just get out the pencil and paper and gaze at the figures before you and I’ll wager the situation Isn’t half as bad as it is thought. Old Man Hard Luck sometimes does concentrate on one’s pocketbook. The only way out seems to slow up on expenditures as far as any luxuries' |»ap#r:oncerned and to keep the Christ PB^nas giving down to the members of the Immediate family. Anyone who has had extra expense cuts down on other things until caught up with regular salary. Never get discouraged about money, for that is the first step to ruination. Just forget what’s past and work hard for a clean slate. The budget that is so hated at present may come into use again when the pocketbook Is full and be found mighty helpful. Religion Again. Dear Miss Allen: I am coming again to you for advice. I love a man who Is a Jew. Because I am not Jewish, I wish to know how to get him in terested in my parents. He often tells mo that he loves me and I am very sure that 1 love him. We have known each other for about five months, but have never gone to each other’s home. I think it is about time for him to know my father. I would like to meet, his mother. At certain times X have tried to make myself for get him. but I cannot. The more I try, the more I love him. I like in teresting times, and he certainly has Shown them to me when I am with him. ANXIOUS. Many girls who are Gentiles have married Jews and have been very happy. Difference in religious beliefs and customs ought not to make any gre it difference if your love is big enough to surmount any obstacles. If your man and his family are orthodox .lews it might be harder for you to break Into the home, circle. I would advise you to meet all of hts family ha ve him nr.ett yours, and then BENO’S of Council Bluffs Says to You: —Do you seek fine things for gifts? Adele Garrison “My Husband’s Love” Madge Decides to Accompany Harriet. "Oh! Margaret! If only—’’ she be gan, then halted and substituted wist fully— “If only you were going to be down at the farm, too.” Heading Harriet's wistful wish that I go with her to the farm was to me like discovering a gate out of a walled inclosure which appeared to have no exit. Dicky and 1 were at cross pur poses. and while I acknowledged that I had misjudged his attitude toward Alfred's interest in Bess Dean I could not forget tiie yet unexplained mid night accident Which had left a wo man's handkerchief and neck scarf as bandages around his head, nor the unusual and mysterious interest in Mollie fc’awcett which he had dis played. Until we were on a better plane of understanding our daily life together, cooped up in the sordid little apartment, had explosives con cealed In every corner. i*y absence might not help things, but jjt least It would give me time to draw my mentHl breath, something which I felt I had omitted for many days. There was also a malicious little con sciousness In the hack of my brain that it might be salutary for Dicky j to miss the many comfortable details j of homekeeping which only a woman in a house can give. I made my decision quickly, aind turned my sister-in-law with it. "But 1 am going to be down there with you," I said smiling. Harriet Relieved. "Oh!" the little exclamation was filled with grateful relief. Then, with quick apprehension, "but you are not going just for me. are you? "Vou know how much Edwin wants visitors for Mrs. Durkee Hits week,” I said. “Of course she would like to have somebody In her room 24 hours a day. and if I am in the city she will send for me frequently. But Alfred and Leila are enough. By to morrow morning we ought to know pretty definitely whether or not she is out of danger?" I paused and look ed at tier inquiringly. "Of course there-is always dan ger.” she replied with the caution demanded by any one of a surgeon’s entourage, "but this sort of thing does not entail the shock of an In ternal operation, if Edwin says she is In good shape tomorrow morning, you can go with a fairly clear con science.” "Suppose we wait until the after noon train tomorrow," l suggested. “That will ghe me time to see Mrs. Murker, if Edwin will let me, and I think lie will. I'll telephone mother in .tho morning that we’re coming, and we ll ho out there In time to eat the fatted fowl that she will order sacrificed as soon as she hears we’re on the way.” "The afternoon train will suit me perfectly." Harriet returned, "but,” with a little smile, "do you think It wise to telephone mother? You’re likely to have Katie <ip the way to te hospital or the undertaker by the time we get there." "I know," I returned, "but mother never would forgive mo If X didn't telephone in time for them to pre pare a special dinner for us. As for the house, it is all In readiness for you. She had her housecleaning spasm when she first heard of your coming. So I think Katlo will be In' tact when we reach there." "I trust so. She is too picturesque and bizarre a creature to be ground into bits. And she certainly is faith ful.” I bit my lips to keep back a hasty retort, and hoped that Harriet did not see the (lush upon my cheek. 1 knew that she had dlsa pproved of my management of Katie upon her previous visits, believing that I allowed tlm girl too many privileges, but f resented the implied criticism of my faithful little maid, even though I realized the absurdity of permitting so silly a. thing to mar the friendship between my stately sister-in-law and myself, which had been so markedly augmented in the last few days. 1 was relieved indeed when I heard Dickey's key in the lock. There would he no opportunity now for Harriet to guess that she had offended me. Personals Mrs. If. K. Cummings, wife of Judge Cummings of Marshalltown, la., is spending the week at the F. F.
