Coolidge Is Silent on Presidential Race (Continued from Puce One.) non has just made formal announce ments of Frank Hitchcock as his manager. There la no Coolidge head quarter?. • For Coolidge to continue this course of making no effort loward getting the nomination except by working hard at hia job, would he consistent with a policy that has served him well in the past. When he was governor of Massachusetts a group of his friends, acting inde pently of Coolidge himself, opened a headquarters, selected a manager, and began to work for delegates to elevate Coolidge to the presidency. After this had gone on for sonje time, Coolidge took formal notice of it and issued a statement from which the following sentences are taken. "The times require of men charged with public responsibility a single ness of purpose. The curse of the present is the almost universal grasp ing for power in high places and in low, to the exclusion of the dis charge of the obligations. It is al ways well for men to walk humbly. Farmer Statement Recalled. "The great office of governor of the commonwealth of Massachusetts has twice been conferred upon me There is only one higher honor in. the gift of the people of the nation For that office my name has been proposed by men whose judgment en titles their decisions to a great re spect, aud their proposal has not been unsupported by a most respect able public approval. Tor all this I am deeply appreciative, with an appreciation which words alone can not express'. "I have never said t will become a candidate for president. 1 have never accepted, unless by silence, ef forts made by statesmen of more than national reputation to present my name to the convention. I have made it plain I could not seek this office. "I have a great desire to walk humbly and discharge my obligations. My paramount obligation is not to expose the great office of governor, but to guard and protect It. The peo ple are entitled to know that their office is to be administered not for my benefit, but for their benefit, and that l am not placing myself in any position where any other object could be inferred. There must be no im putation. luyvever unfounded, that I permit their office to be used any where for manipulated purposes. I cannot consent to have their office taken into any contest for delegates in my own state. I have not been and I am not a candjfiate for pres ident." It Is this attitude that is now re garded by some of the republican leaders as the best way to meet John son’s rather truculent challenging They say it would save Coolidge from the descent indignity involved In a president entering the primaries against Johnson, would give him the maximum time and liberty of action to make a good record as president and might more surely lead him to ■-> Extra Selling Space— Extra Sales People To take care of the crowds that we expect to take advantage of this truly marvelous Dress Sale Friday.
