IS.—Contin ued high costs of coal have driven many farmers of Platte, polk and Ilutler counties to the uso of crude oil and petroleum where basement heat is the rule. If rapidly Increas ing consignments-of oil shipped by freight to many farmers can be used as a criterion, especially when oil shipments to rural points this year show more than a 300 per cent In crease over the year before. ThatN com will be used for kitchen fuel in spite of the high prices is another declaration being made by many of the farmers who find their cribs, as the picking eeason advances, filled with nice appearing ears, but musty cobs, rendering them prac tically useless for marttet purposes, although valuable for the feeding of livestock. The high price of com kept hun dreds of farmers in this section of the Platte and Loup valleys from buying feeder cattle. Hoping to sell their yiels at the top of the mnrket, inany of them have disposed of all surplus hogs, steers and chickens. There has been a slight resumption noted during the past week In the purchase of feeders from the west ern ranges, but the amount is far below normal. As a result of having disposed of their livestock only to find that a Mg percentage of their corn crop was unmarketable, farmers are declaring that corn pickers are asking too much when they require wages of 5 and 6 cents a bushel for picking corn where the yields are good and 10 cents a bushel where the hall swept through the fields. Having made no provision to feed livestock they declare they will burn the un marketable corn, adding that the freight rates and the comparative prices for beef on the hoof offered by the packers do not make up the difference in expenditure and effort. As a result, egg shipments and offerings of eggs on the local mar kets do not meet the demands be cause hens and spring pullets have been disposed of literally by the thou sands, according to reports of Swift 6 company’s manager, W. W. Wit ter, here. Tn other years farmers In this sec tion have marketed literally thou sands of turkeys for the holiday trade. This year the offerings have been reduced to hundreds. The con tinued wet weather during the early spring and summer wrought havoc among the flocke of young turkeys and prices ranging from 50 to 76 cents a pound are predicted for Thanksgiving. Dealeis declare that Christmas turkeys may cost 90 cents a pound at retail. Ducks and geese, on the other hand, exceed the usual production of central Nebraska In others years, bringing lower retail prices for that class of poultry than any other kind. This year's hay crop has been ex > cep ionnlly heavy, but the wet sea son. which has shown a heavier pre cipitation during the summer months here thnn is usually recorded throtyh the entire year, encouraged the growth of weeds to such an extent that the yield is second class.
