Burgess Bedtime Stories ___ i Little did Danny Meadow Mouse guess all the things that were ahead of him. He was a prisoner in the tiny cupboard in the airplane in which he had been carried away from the Green Meadows. The man who flew that airplane hail seen Danny run into that tiny cupboard and had shut the door. This didn't worry IJanny \ ory much. He had a great deal ot confidence in those sharp teeth of his. and he felt sure he could gnaw Ids way out. Now, Hie avitor, which is what a ntun who flies an airplane is called, wras a lover of ani luals. He guessed right away that Danny Meadow Mouse must have climbed into that airplane way hack on the Clreen Meadows early that morning. It tickled him to think that he had Danny for a passenger on that long journey. He decided right away that he would keep Danny. It would ,be fun to have Danny along on other JourYieys up In the air. So the aviator went away and pres ently retuhned with a little cage-like trap. He opened the little door of the tiny cupboard just wide enough for Danny Meadow Mouse to come out. Then he set his trap right In front of it. Danny couldn't get out without going right Into that trap. When ho was sure that it was set just right he went away. All was still. BUT \ HE TALKS \TOO MUCH'.y hiding In the liny cupboard, listened and listened. There wasn’t a sound. He waited a long time. Then very carefully he approached the crack made by the open door. He waited there a while listening. Then he made up his rnind that everything was safe, and he came out. He walked right Into that cage-like trap. Snap! A little wire door had closed. Danny was a prisoner! Of course. Danny was dreadfully frightened. He tried his sharp teeth on the wines of that cage, but he soon found that he couldn't bite through them. He merely hurt his teeth and his jaws. Perhaps you can guess how Danny felt. How he did wish that he had run away when he had the chance, despite all the dangers. "I don't know what I’m going to do. I guess this is the end of everything,” whimpered Danny. And then the aviator came back. He brought with him a larger wire cage. So the aviator went awa.v and pre sently returned with a little rage like trap. fta it was a little box with a hole in it just big enough for Danny to pass through. He put Danny in the rage. Danny's one thought was to get out of sight, and at one* he ran Into that little box. Inside he found a nice soft bed. The wan put some food in the t_ag» "There,” said he, "I’ll leave you t< get acquainted with your new hon>« I think you and I are going to b« grtM great friends. I’m sure of it. Horn* day if, we ever get back on the Greer Meadow* I'll let you go. 1'ntil ther you will fly with me. I think it it going to bring me good luck.” He went away and left Danny alonr to get acquainted with hi* new home After a while he ventured out. Hr soon found out that he was still t prisoner. But he also found the food #nd being, hungry he proceeded to fit his stomach. Somehow he no longei felt the great fear he had felt before He knew that that man meant to b< a friend or he would not have brought that food and provided that soft bed (Copyrffht, 192 3. > The next story: "Danny Meador Mouse Sees Strange Sights.” Wardrobe Stolen.
