Moved in for the Winter Yet? Read “Moving and Trucking^ loday FARM CONDITIONS - 'GROWING BETTER - i Ai>ert N. Mathers, Speaker of tlouse, Says Industry Still / Lags, However. / * _ ij J r I Albert N. Mathers of Gerlng, speak I er of the Nebraska house, Is in Omaha I on business. He attended the Roose I velt club dinner at Lincoln Saturday [ evening and was one of the speakers. Ma: h*’rt, who is one of the teally big farmers of western Ne l .as .a, is intensely interested in ail the problems facing the farmers and livestock feeders, and is identified w.th agricultural interests in every way. He owns eight farms in the North Platte valley and personally superintends several of them. This year he raised approximately 12,000 bushels of potatoes and several thou sand tons of sugar beets. “Farmers are in a better financial condition now than they were a year or so ago,” said Speaker Mathers this morning, "but not yet up on an equal plane with other great and important groups of industry. They have many problems yet to solve. Agricultural prosperity will not be thoroughly re established by radical thought through .oglslative action alone, neither can the problems of the farmers be solved wholly by farmers. We must first nave business methods In farming, in production and marketing. Farmers musts In a largo measure solve their own problems. Must Recognize Fanner. “However, in several places the na tional congress and administration .must recognize agriculture the sahto as other great groups and give that great basic industry honest and equal consideration. There is prosperity q/iead. Now, let there be honest co i operation between the east and the [ west, economic and legislative; let this prosperity be general, let all pro Iducers and fundamental elements re ceive a square deal. A safe and sane middle course must shape the destiny nf Nebraska and the nation. Let us labor to even conditions by bringing 11 to a higher level rather than by ■ringing nil to a lower level.” Speaker Mathers reoorts the sugar ■eet crop about one-half out of the --round and weather conditions about i he average. He also reports that the matter of a beet contract for next cear being considered at this time. The beet growers get up the claim hat if they sign a participating con ract with the sugar company ' they ihould have the privilege of putting heir own accountants on the sugar company's books to ascertain If they ire getting their full share. Whether he sugar company will accede to this lemand is a moot question. He is Iso taking a leading part in the de elopment of the dairy Industry in the ft orth Platte valley, ft Politics Chaotic. 1 “No, I'm not taking much part in j^ftic political discussions at present,” id Speaker Mathers with a smile. ''Personally, things are in a very k atifylng condition, but things politi cal are in somewhat of a chaotic enn H] tion right now, so I'm waiting until ^fthe troubled waters are a bit smoother ^ftefore making any predictions.” New York — Day by Day— By O.
