Classified Ad News Is Good News; Start Reading It Today | Brookhart Says Working Classes in Need of Help Takes Up Cudgel in Behalf of Farmers and Laborers in Anamosa Ad* dress. Anamosa, *a., Oct. II.—Declaring that the paramount • Issues confront ing the people of Iowa at the present time are a co operative code for farm ers and laboring people, Including his own proposed amendment for co-op erative banks, a farmers' marketing bill and the federal reserve adminis tration, United States Senator Smith IV. Brookhart today made clear his siand on these issues in an address given before an American Legion bar becue here. In reviewing his assault on the’de flation policy of the federal reserve board, summarizing briefly the status of legislation sponsored or supported by him in the United States senate, and referring to his platform in the coming campaign, Senator Brookhart said in part: "When I first became a candidate for the senate I stated my platform in concrete and distinct terms. The issues have not changed except that two points in the platform have been fulfilled. Newberry resigned the day I went to Washington and the ship subsidy bill was defeated. The sol diers' bonus was vetoed and ques tions of taxing war profits and excess profits to pay it, as against taxing the common people in sales taxes, are yet to be settled. I introduced a bill to repeal all the vltai sections of the railroad law and amend the old law to pump water nut of the valuation, stop the capitalization of unearned increment and reduce the return to ►”** the Interest rate on the bonded por tion of the capital. It was smothered in the committee. Six members of that committee were defeated in the election and I hope the committee will he reorganized so my bill can come out for consideration. Farmers Neglected. w, "Nothing was done toward a co operative code for the farmers and laboring people and my amendment for co-operative hanks had no chance. The farmers' marketing bill was smothered and the agricultural legis lation that did pass was inadequate and a makeshift- These, together with the federal reserve administra tion, are the burning questions in Iowa.” The senator also referred to attacks upon nis recent speech to the Ameri can Legion at Indianapolis: "The press quoted me as saying that C. H. McNider had caused the Muscatine State bank to call loans upon my tenant. I made no such statement. When Mr. Meredith threat ened to sue me for 30 cents I offered him the proceeds from a 240-acre farm in Muscatine county in which I own a half interest, subject to a $20,000 joint stock land mortgage, if 'ya would pay the interest, taxes and |p expenses. He found a drainage tax and n fused the offer. Then neighbors of mine not in the drainage district offered to put in another -40 acres on the same terms. Meredith then went to the chamber of commerce at Davenport and described my farm as a duck pond. The Muscatine State t-?.nk sent for my tenant and told him his notes must be paid when due. Says Knemies Afraid. ' This tenant was a German-Amer ican hoy who had worked on the farm as a hired hand before the war. When the war came on he enlisted in our army and served a year and a half in France. When he came back I believed in him and proposed that he take charge of the farm in a half and half partnership. It required some capital and my brother and I hacked him at the Muscatine State bank for about $3,600. He has re duced his loan about $400 a year, by the hardest work and the closest sav in, although our half has not paid ex penses and taxes in these McNider times. "The moment has arrived when perhaps I should say something about the issues of the coining campaign in Iowa to the soidlers of the American Legion. Up to date my enemies have chosen the issue and they have fenced it about with falsehood, misrepresen tation and deceit. They have located it a long way from home because there are burning questions at home which they are afraid to face. They also want to conceal the personnel itnd purpose of the vicious attack which they make upon me. They want to dodge and avoid the live is sue. This, I promise you, they shall not do.” Credit Men Urge Federal Control of All Banking Washington, Oct. 12.—Par collce tion of checks and the placing of all banking under federal supervision were among the measures urged to day before the joint congressional committee investigating failure of state banks to enter the federal ra serve system. J. H. Tregoe of New York, score tary-treasurer. of the National Asso ciation of Credit Mon, advocated both proposals, while W. W. Orr, assistant secretary of the association, stressed the desire for par collection in his testimony. Fire Destroys Orphanage.
